We had the good fortune of connecting with Maud Guerard and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maud, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
In her Oscar acceptance speech in 2017, Viola Davis said “I became an artist, and thank God I did, because we are the only profession that celebrates what it means to live a life”. I think that this sums up beautifully how I feel about acting. To love, mourn, fail, thrive, forgive, reveal, lose, dream, have passion, heal, beauty, ugliness, compassion… I could go on and on, words and words that enclose the beauty of being alive. I love people, behaviors, I love embodying a story, a human, discovering and sharing all the depth there is to a single relationship, or a single moment, to a single line or a single look. This is what I strive to do in my acting — okay I sound cheesy now, I’ll stop hahaha. But I meant all the things I just said.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
There’s so much to be excited about. I just finished acting school and I have so much more tools to express my creativity. The joys of studying acting are to spend years immersed in arts, having a safe place to explore and discover the extent of what you can do, which has no limitation.
These past two years for me have been about surprises and exploration. On set, on stage, or in school I got to embody multiple characters, understand more what I am the most comfortable as, what are my “go-to” habits, how to get rid of the ones that I don’t need. Getting out of my comfort zone is something that made me proud, being able to risk in a part, in a moment. Turns out that most of the time it pays off well!
The things that you care the most about, are usually not the most simple, so no it is not easy. You’re pursuing a career in which less than 2% of the people make a living off of. What is great is that it makes you acknowledge what a privilege it is to get there. I think it only makes you respect your craft more.
If there’s something I learned in acting school, it is to have compassion and not judge. Okay, here is where my cheesiness shows up again: my favorite quote is, “Come to the rescue with love, and peace will follow.”~ River Phoenix. If I wanted to share something during my career, it is love – to love more. We don’t love enough. People have come to believe that it is so hard to love each other – just love more. Just love.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Food is my favorite thing to test everywhere I go. So honest to God I’d make a point of trying as many restaurants as possible. My favorite pizzeria is L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele. Il Pastaio is nice in Beverly Hills for dinner, they have great pasta. Urth Cafe is a must, for Breakfast, lunch, or a little break in the afternoon. There are so many, Fia, Beauty and Essex, Sugarfish (they have great Sushi), Bricks and Scones is a nice coffee shop…
I’d also have them try the Gluten-free Truffles from Milk bar, they’re one of my favorite things.
Okay, besides food, the beaches are nice, I’d say take a look at El Matador State Beach in Malibu. I love outdoor stuff so for sure we’d go on a hike, and I love Universal Studios so we’d probably spend a day there. I think the museums in LA are beautiful, the LACMA, the Getty, the Broad. The Van Gogh exhibit will be in LA in a few months, if you manage to get a ticket, it looks beautiful.
There’s a lot to do, but I love painting, so the last thing, I’d probably bring us to a park with canvases brushes and paint, snacks and wine during sunset, that’s it! Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people I could think of, my friends, my teachers, the people I met along the way who have taught me something or helped me, the artists that have inspired me. But I would dedicate this to my mother. I receive unconditional support from her, and I would not in my wildest dreams be where I am today without her help. I work hard to get where I wanna be, and she works harder to allow me to have the freedom to be an artist. It isn’t something I can ever repay, and I will forever be grateful.
