We had the good fortune of connecting with Cambreisha Montgomery and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cambreisha, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Sexuality is a natural part of human development and I wanted to create a safe space for teenage girls to explore this part of their life. I didn’t want them to feel ashamed or intimidated about the process of exploring sex and relationships. I honestly felt like I could use my own personal experiences along with my close friends to properly educate and prepare these young women on all things sex, which is much more than the act itself. Sexuality is how you feel about yourself, your expectations of your partner, and understanding what your body is going through developmentally. My goal was for these future women to explore their curiosities because sex isn’t all bad and I think its irresponsible to tell teens not to have sex without explaining exactly the good, the bad, and the ugly.
What should our readers know about your business?
GLOW GIRLS IS DEDICATED TO EDUCATING TEENAGE GIRLS ABOUT RELATIONSHIPS, LOVE, AND SEX AS WELL AS WHAT SEX SHOULD BE AND SHOULDN’T BE. GLOW GIRLS ALSO TEACHES YOUNG WOMEN THE IMPORTANCE OF SELF-LOVE AND SETTING BOUNDARIES WITH THEIR HEART, LOVE, AND BODIES. WHAT SETS GLOW GIRLS APART FROM OTHER ORGANIZATIONS IS HOW INTERACTIVE AND RELATABLE THE APPROACH IS, WE MEET GIRLS WHERE THEY ARE IN THEIR JOURNEY AND WE ENCOURAGE THEM TO BE CURIOUS, TAKING THE SHAME OUT OF THEIR NATURAL EVOLUTION OF SEX. AT GLOW GIRLS, WE DO NOT TELL GIRLS WHAT TO DO, BUT WE EDUCATE THEM SO THAT THEY CAN MAKE THEIR OWN DECISIONS AND FEEL CONFIDENT IN DOING SO. THE JOURNEY TO FINALLY LAUNCHING GLOW GIRLS WASN’T EASY BECAUSE I FELT LIKE WHAT IF I AM TELLING TOO MUCH OR NOT ENOUGH AND I HAD A LOT OF SELF DOUBT, BUT WITH THE ENCOURAGEMENT OF MY FRIENDS, I KNEW IT WAS TIME. I CREATED A SERIES OF E-BOOKS AND TURNED THEM INTO A INTERACTIVE PRESENTATION AND STARTED REACHING OUT TO A VARIETY OF GROUPS TO SEE IF I COULD TALK TO THEIR GIRLS. A LOT OF NO’S FINALLY TURNED INTO YES’S AND IT HAS BEEN AN AMAZING JOURNEY THUS FAR. I LEARNED TO JUST GO FOR IT AND DON’T QUESTION YOURSELF IF IT IS YOUR PASSION. SOMEONE OUT THERE CAN BENEFIT FROM THE IDEAS IN YOUR HEAD, SO DON’T KEEP THEM THERE, PUT THEM OUT FOR THE WORLD TO SEE. GLOW GIRLS IS THE FUTURE OF SEX EDUCATION AND THE END GOAL IS TO BE IN SCHOOLS ACROSS THE NATION ENSURING THAT GIRLS ARE EDUCATED ENOUGH TO MAKE HEALTHY DECISIONS WHEN IT COMES TO THEIR BODIES.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am a HUGE foodie, so I would definitely go to Salsa and Beer in North Hollywood, Republique, Catch LA, California Fish Grill, and Javiers. Then of course we have to go to Venice Beach to see the street performers, skateboarders, and to people watch. Then we will walk to the Santa Monica Pier and ride the mini rollercoaster and Ferris Wheel. Then we have to go to Hollywood Blvd to walk the strip, then it’s off to the Beverly Center to do some shopping and get more food from Southern Comfort LA. Gotta go to the Sugar Factory and get drinks and then go to the Grove for more shopping, because who can shop too much? The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to shoutout to one of my mentors Renee Curry because working with her nonprofit, The Center for the Empowerment of Families, is why I created Glow Girls. Working with CEF taught me the importance of preventative measures when it came to educating teens on crucial topics such as sex and relationships. Renee’s guidance and mentorship were so important to me and my journey and I am forever grateful for her willingness to guide me. I would also like to Shoutout John Van App, the author of “How to Avoid Marrying a Jerk” for laying the groundwork for healthy relationships. This book helped me to put things into a more relatable and memorable format when talking to my teens. Without my friends, Milli, Ree, Tanesha, Karia, Ellena, Erika, Tanya, and so many more for supporting and encouraging this journey. You ladies shared intimate details about your personal journies revolving around failed and successful relationships and what you thought teens girls should know about sex and without your input, Glow Girls wouldn’t be what it is today. I love you ladies and I am grateful for having you in my life supporting and cheering me along this journey.
