Meet Matthew Kessler | Plant Specialist & Shop Owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Matthew Kessler and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Matthew, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind our success and brand is of course our passion for all things plants but mainly it’s building relationships. Building relationships with our customers and having them know we are here for them is very important to us.

What should our readers know about your business?
Myself and my girlfriend Steph own a plant shop in Glendale called Plant Provisions. We specialize in tropical indoor plants, handmade pottery, and plant accessories. But we don’t just sell plants; we pride ourselves on our relationships with our customers and willingness to help them along their plant journey. Our passion for people matches our passion for plants. Our belief that kindness breeds more kindness has proven true over and over. We would not be where we are now without the kindness of others. Another belief we have that has enabled us to achieve so many of our goals is that when we encounter an uncomfortable, risky situation, we go into it with blind optimism. That simple philosophy – to not overthink and just let our passion take the wheel, has rewarded us greatly and we’re so excited about the future of Plant Provisions. We are currently building our plant shop with an opening scheduled for mid Summer. In the following months we will have plant care workshops, collaborations, and special events.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
For a friend’s weeklong trip we would spend our mornings walking at Griffith Park Trails, and take picnic breaks at the park. In the afternoons we would walk the Americana, grab a bite at Bacari GDL (the pork belly is amazing). Maybe check out The Museum of Neon Art (MONA). We would also take them to the surrounding areas, such as Los Feliz, Highland Park, Silver lake, and Downtown LA to check out some of our favorite restaurants like Joy, The Heights, The Black Cat, Sonora Town, Tacos 1986 and countless others. In the evenings we would probably have cocktails at our shop haha

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Myself and my girlfriend/business partner Stephania Gonzalez would love to dedicate our shoutout to our loyal customers who’ve been with us since the beginning. The true believers. We’ve grown so much over the past year and we definitely would not be where we are without our core of loyal customers whom we now call dear friends. Their words of encouragement and positivity throughout our entrepreneurial journey gave us that extra fuel to our fire. It’s been an emotional roller coaster getting to where we are now. We are forever grateful.
