We had the good fortune of connecting with Brenda Hendricks and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brenda, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Work Life balance has always been a struggle, but also my motivation. It seems as if, just when I feel like I have a good routine or balance going, life throws you a curve ball. I guess that’s why they say “work hard, play harder” right? I am a wife, a mom and a business owner. I am also very involved in my daughters’ school as I am part of the Parent Faculty Organization. During the school year the way I schedule my clients revolves around my girls school schedule.  Needless to say there’s a lot of driving back and forth to and from the salon. I do my best to manage my time so that I may accommodate my clients while still being present with my family and friends.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am the owner and lead hair and makeup artist of Brenda Hendricks Artistry. I offer in salon and on location glam, specializing in bridal hair and makeup. I am mostly known for my soft or natural glam makeup looks and for my ability to create different hairstyles, that look clean, shiny and elegant. Although I have been licensed for 15 years, believe it or not the most rewarding have been the last 5 years. So many changes and growth both personally and professionally, with my biggest struggle always being my home/work life balance. I enjoy being behind the chair day to day, but my passion is working with brides. There is something so special about getting a bride ready to walk down the aisle. The moment they look at themselves all done up for the first time is the moment I wait for! It’s always such an honor to be a part of someone’s wedding day. I am very thankful for all the experiences I’ve had. They have all helped me learn, grow and mold my business in to what it is today. The best compliment a past bride or vendor could give me is a referral. To me that is confirmation that I did what I set out to do, glam them up, make them feel beautiful and provide exceptional service.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am so blessed to live in a such a beautiful area! Our family recently purchased a camping trailer. If we could plan ahead, I would take them “glamping” to one of my favorite spots in Carpinteria. I’ve never been a “nature girl” but having the trailer makes it so much easier! Carpinteria State Beach has so much to offer. There’s nothing like spending the day hanging out on a beautiful, sunny California beach that is walking distance to Islands Brewing Company to get a nice cold beer. Or picking up a delicious burger, fries and milkshake from The Spot and ending the night with a warm campfire listening to the sound of waves crashing on the shore.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
While there are so many people, family and friends that keep me sane (you know who you are). A long list of vendors that have become friends, other artists that have inspired, pushed me to better myself while coming together to create magic for weddings. This shout out goes to Michelle Ramirez and Bouavan Sanchez. Michelle Ramirez Photography has taught me things about styling and makeup for the bridal industry that I don’t think I would have learned without her. She helped me pay more attention to small details by showing me what she sees through her camera. Little details that normally would go unnoticed but make a huge difference to create picture perfect moments. Tangled Lotus, Bouavan Sanchez, or as most of us call her “Bo” creates the most gorgeous bouquets and floral designs that I have ever seen! A bride’s look would not be complete without a beautiful bouquet. Both of these ladies’ work and work ethic is incredible. Some would even call us three their “dream team” when it comes to a picture perfect bride. So, for that, a HUGE thank you to my incredibly talented friends Michelle Ramirez Photography and Tangled Lotus.
