We had the good fortune of connecting with Jemar Michael and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jemar, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I started my business Frenchwood Studios simply because I was tired of feeling all of the negativity the world has to offer. I felt myself and people around me becoming very dark. So I wanted to find a way to bring some life, joy, and color to my world, so I decided to make tie dye t shirts.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
So I’m an artist through and through wether it’s performative or physical, I love art. As a kid I was really into arts n crafts and surprisingly pretty shy. It wasn’t until I was 14 where I fell in love the theater which got me into acting. Fast forward to booking my first film and series Dear White People, which fourth and final season premieres this fall, I wanted to find a way to keep myself busy as well as making money while not filming. I sold slime, art, and now currently tie dye! I found my passion for tie dye during the pandemic. As someone who is an avid online shopper I would continue to see designer brands with mediocre dyes all with the same three primary colors so I decided to change it up a bit with more bold color choices and palettes. I wanted to focus my brand on the fashion side that the traditional “hippie” side. In terms of technique I actually prefer to ice dye over traditional tie dye which creates a unique color patterns as the ice melts. I’m most excited that I was able to do this all on my own. Over 156 pieces dyed so far and over 150 to go! Everything ranging from tees to hats to tanks and shorts! There’s been times I’ve wanted to quit and give up but I’m so proud of myself and excited to get these shirts onto people’s backs! It exciting seeing people wear stuff you made with your hands. I’m most excited about my “Protect Your Peace” shirts that range in size from Small to 7XL. I try to make my brand as inclusive as possible! My website does not go by gender, only size. I aim to create a brand that feels safe for all to feel included. I’ve learned that there’s so much that goes into starting up a business. I’m still learning as I go but one thing I can say is, “Never give up!”
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
So I live in Marina Del Rey, and I love going up and down the coast. In my area we could get breakfast at Great White, ride bikes in Santa Monica, get Poke at Sweetfin for lunch, and then catch some rays at the pool before heading to dinner at Beachside. I also love Beverly Hills. We could spend a day shopping and getting lunch at Crustacean. Head to Weho for a night out at the clubs! Maybe take a day trip Santa Barbara one day and go paddle boarding! Or even keep in the city and hike Runyon and then hit Kitchen 24 for happy hour!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to my partner for always believing in me and every endeavor I’ve thrown myself into. Without his love and support I would not be where I am today.
