We had the good fortune of connecting with Obed Magny and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Obed, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
In the current climate in policing, there is a lot of turmoil where communities are demanding change through reforms. Communities are looking for their officers to show more compassion and empathy, especially in black communities. In policing, there is little to no training in interpersonal skills. I wanted to provide a service where I provide training in the soft skills to law enforcement agencies to keep their officers and their citizens safe. By increasing empathy, compassion, and humanity, it’ll increase trust and legitimacy in our communities.

What should our readers know about your business?
I’m the Founder and CEO of Magny Leadership. We provide emotional intelligence training and coaching to law enforcement agencies. What sets us apart from others is the passion and experience we have in helping the policing profession. When I was a doctoral student, I came across the subject of emotional intelligence and realized that this particular training was rarely taught in law enforcement. As a police officer, I knew this was a key piece of training that was crucial in interpersonal communications to mitigate adverse interactions. That is what prompted me to build this business. Using evidence-based training and strategies to help officers and communities safe is a passion of mine. Since then I’ve trained and coached many law enforcement professionals all over the country.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Sacramento has grown a bit in the 17 years I’ve been here. The Golden1 Center and all of the new businesses and restaurants around it has made downtown Sacramento vibrant and an exciting place to be for many people. My favorite place to eat is a restaurant called Q1227. It’s located just outside of Sacramento (Roseville). They have a great selection of food there and their seafood is excellent. In the evenings especially on the weekends, The Revival Bar is the best hangout! It’s a poolside lounge on the roof of The Sawyer Hotel right across from the Golden1 Center in downtown Sacramento.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are too many people to name in my story. First and foremost, my parents. They’re mostly responsible for me being the man that I am today. They’ve always been there for me, even when I was a little bit of a brat growing up. lol
