Meet Rhiannon Hopkins | Actor-Musician, Writer & Comedian

We had the good fortune of connecting with Rhiannon Hopkins and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rhiannon, what’s your definition for success?
I think my definition of ‘success’ is always changing, especially as I get older. In the creative industry it’s so easy to feel ‘unsuccessful’ – unsuccessful because you didn’t get that recall or because your TV script didn’t get picked up or even because the ever changing nature of an industry like this means relationships can suffer. But I guess I’ve started to question – who is measuring success and in what sense? For me, success comes in many different forms – success in career, success in love, success in friendships – finding happiness and getting a balance in of all of them is really an impressive thing and that at the end of it all is the real success I guess.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a performer, a writer and a singer-songwriter. I have written and performed material as a musical comedian, released my debut EP as a singer-songwriter and performed as an actor, musician and dancer all over the world. I think my eclectic training background sets me apart from others – from a young age I was a classical musician, before training professionally as a dancer, before going onto work in theatre and subsequently moving on to writing. Because of this, I like to create art that fuses disciplines and have a varied skill set that can be called upon. I have to say, this is also one of the challenges I have faced though – I think diversifying sometimes means that that lack of complete focus on one thing in particular means it takes longer to find what it is you’re aiming for perhaps. However, for me, diversity is key and I try to allow myself to go creatively with what I feel and to prove that it’s possible to take on different roles creatively and do them well.
I’m proud of the journey I have come on, from performer to creative. I always knew that there was part of me that wanted to be on a creative team but it took different experiences along the way to figure out in which way. I’m proud the work I’ve created – my debut EP ‘Lost In The Dark’ (under my artist name Alice Ray), my original comedy song ‘Naked Pictures’ which won Best Comedy Song at the ‘International Songwriting Competition’ and the music video for it, which had over 150,00 views online and won awards at various festivals.
I certainly wouldn’t say it was easy to get to where I am and I wouldn’t say I have yet done all the things I would like to do, but I have overcome the challenges by remaining certain in the fact that I want and need to be creating art and by surrounding myself with supportive people.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My parents have always supported me wanting to make a career out of being creative. I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to play instruments from a young age and that is something I will always be grateful for – I would absolutely not be doing what I’m doing without their consistent love and support.
