We had the good fortune of connecting with Fany de la Chica and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Fany, what role has risk played in your life or career?
In my case, I think I took the risk when I decided to be a filmmaker and singer. As a filmmaker, I made the risk of making observational documentaries, slow cinema that is not very commercial.
And as a singer, to compose songs that mix flamenco with jazz.
I come from a working-class family and make a living out of art when your family is not wealthy is very complicated. But I always took the risk of being free and doing my art from this freedom without restrictions.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My work has benefited from my cultural roots, I’m originally from Andalusia, (Spain). My films delve into themes related to family; belonging to a community, breaking of traditions and questioning self-identity to defying patriarchy. I empower women with my films, I advocate for gender equality and my stories are told from a female point of view and with a woman or girl as the protagonist. I portray the female universe and my stories come from my personal feelings. My ultimate goal is to move the audience, for this reason, I put my heart into my films. I think is difficult to be a woman and being in film. The biggest obstacle always is to come from a humble family . A lot of artists come from wealthy families and from them everything is easier, as they have connections and they normally focus only in their artistic practice.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m new in Los Angeles so I don’t know a lot of places. But for sure I would take them to Malibu and to the second hand market on Sundays at Melrose

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I think in my case my biggest support has been my father. He gave me the encourage to continuing fighting for my dreams. Economically, the foundation Rafael del Pino in Spain gave me a huge support with a scholarship that founded my MFA in directing/screenwriting at Columbia University.
