We had the good fortune of connecting with Charlie Powell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Charlie, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
In my mind, giving up is the worse thing I could do. I couldn’t live with the fact I would never actually know what I’m capable of, and most importantly I wouldn’t be able to inspire others to keep chasing their dreams. When life gets tough, when obstacles occur and when nothing is going your way, thats when you have to push on. If your goals is hard to reach, all that hard work and struggle will make it so much more rewarding when you eventually succeed. Looking for support from fellow friends and family will help guide your way, but int he end, its YOU that needs to have the determination and drive to keep striving to reach for your short or long term goals.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think what sets me apart from others is my enthusiastic attitude and my constant drive and motivation to reach my long term goals. I love trying new experiences and will always give most things a go because I enjoy having fun and I try not to take myself too seriously. I am full of positivity and always try to look on the bright side of life. I do not wallow in my failures but try to see what I could do better next time. This isn’t always easy in a huge city like Los Angeles but as the saying goes ‘ What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger’. Everyday I am looking at a new ways to better myself, improve my craft and find new strategies to achieve my goals. In my career so far, I am most proud of taking the biggest risk of moving from Sydney, Australia to Los Angeles at age 19 to pursue a career in acting. That was the hardest and most proudest moment I’ve felt. Saying goodbye to friends, love ones and my pets to go chase a dream wasn’t easy. Looking back I still can’t believe I had the courage to do it. Moving to a huge city that I was unfamilar with was tricky and it took time to understand how everything worked and pieced together. Some lessons I’ve learnt on the way is to surround yourself with a good network of people, you will always need trusted friends to help you when you fall. At the same time, be careful who you trust in this city and always make sure you are keeping your safety in mind when auditioning. I once travelled to a location in the evening to film an acting role I secured. It was at a home residence in a part of town I was less familiar with and was quite and getting dark. When I arrived at the house, I had this gut feeling that something wasn’t right, so I just got back in the car and went home. To this day I am pleased that I followed my instincts and think I definitely made the right judgment call. I want the world to know that I have no regrets and that I will keep chasing my dreams even if it means overcoming the hardest obstacles. I want to make the world a better place with conveying important stories through screen and movement, I want to be looked up to as a role model, sharing my powerful female voice and continue to fight for women rights and gender equality. I hope one day this will come true.
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
My best friend was actually coming to visit Los Angeles before COVID 19 hit in March!. I made an itinerary of my fav spots to show her around one of them being a beach day in Malibu, hire paddle boards and eat at Malibu Cafe, brunch at Beverly Hills Hotel, drinks up on EP and LP rooftop, hang by the pool at my apartment, Hollywood sign, Six Flags and Disneyland.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many people I could shoutout, from my dance school back at home, teaching staff that gave me my love of performing and addiction to the stage and to my high school that opened up the door to acting. This shoutout really comes down to the two people in my life that have always believed in me and encouraged me from the very beginning and thats my parents. I wouldn’t be living in Los Angeles, chasing my dreams if it wasn’t for their constant love and support! I love you Mum and Dad.
