We had the good fortune of connecting with Kylie Miyamoto and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kylie, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve always utilized cooking/baking as an outlet to express my love and gratitude towards others. So when I decided to start my cake business, it was towards the end of 2020. By then, I had plenty of time to think about what I missed and took for granted from a pre-COVID world. With social distancing guidelines set, I wanted to offer smaller cakes so that people didn’t need to be a part of a group to celebrate any occasion. That’s why our tagline is “creating moments to reconnect”. It gives what I do so much more meaning when I know that any cake that someone orders was made to remind someone that they are worth celebrating.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Offering smaller cakes takes away from this mentality that you need to be a part of a group to enjoy. You deserve to eat cake and not share, but if you do, share it with those you care for. I’m proud that I put so much of myself into each cake. It reminds me that by trying new designs, I am creating opportunities for others to think “this reminds of…”, thereby starting a conversation and fostering a connection. It definitely isn’t easy to make something that you hope both tastes and looks good. To help overcome these fears, I remind myself that with experience, talent and confidence grows. If I could summarize my business, it’s that I make cakes for people who love their people.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Let me set the scene, you are my best friend and I drive you to Honda-Ya for yakitori. While we are waiting for the table, we walk to Morning Lavender to remind us how beautiful we are and drink lavender lattes. But wait, I surprise you with their famous Tea Boxes that I purchased two weeks before and tell you we have a picnic set up after lunch. It’s 75 and sunny outside so the picnic is perfect and we have a cocktail (only if you’re over 21). We uber to Vacation Bar for another cocktail then go to Porch and Swing for dinner. We get back and I surprise you with Cream Pan Strawberry Croissants while watching that Netflix movie you’re dying to see.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have to thank my closest circle of friends, family, and my partner who I wish I could place on a pedestal and shout my thanks to. But this article in the mean time will do. My biggest critic has always been myself so to have these people in my corner telling me that these feelings of inadequacy is just fear, helped me continue on this cake journey.
