We had the good fortune of connecting with Deja Bowen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Deja, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor to me is having the support of those around you. If the people in your circle aren’t showing you support it can feel very draining constantly trying to prove something to them when in reality you shouldn’t do the things you love to prove something for other people you should do it because it makes you happy and then support comes with that. The success of my “brand” truly comes from my friends and family who show me continuous support and just are open to listening to all of the silly things that come out of my mouth or like all of the pictures that I post or the videos that I edit. I feel really blessed to have people who just show nothing but love and engage with the content that I create. It’s very encouraging especially in an industry that can be super discouraging!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The art that I do you can be very demanding. It’s very much me giving myself to other people and to be open and judged and looked at objectively. I can’t say there’s really anything that sets me apart from others in this creative field because we’re all striving for the same thing which is to live comfortably while doing what we love. I am proud of how ambitious we are and excited to see how everyone ends up further down the line in our careers, It’s always great seeing your friends thrive in such a tough industry. This path is not easy and it’s not linear which can be annoying but the people you meet along the way could just be the people to help get you where you need to be and that’s what’s got me to where I am currently. It’s thanks to all the people that I’ve met. I’ve always had a hard time asking for help but something I’ve learned is that by simply asking can get you a lot. What I want The world to know about my brand is that it’s literally just me being my authentic nerd self from middle school in a adult body.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Your first stop should be Junior high LA of course! Such a cute space that holds so many awesome events and sell cute merchandise everyone should stop by! Then hiking in either Topanga canyon or the scenic overlook in Baldwin Hills! For drinks Mama Shelter in Hollywood is one of my favorite places, a great rooftop bar! Then a little trip to the beach I personally love Seal Beach, less touristy than Venice or Santa Monica. Lastly for dinner there’s so many good food places to eat I personally love Thai food or Mexican food really any food LA is great for food!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There’s so many people to shout out! Of course I have to start off with the obvious which is my parents! If it weren’t for them spending the money on the after school theater programs are driving me to rehearsal or coming to every show along with my other family members I probably wouldn’t be in the creative industry. Then there’s all of my friends! Too many to name but for every friend who has ever thought of me to use in their project I am forever grateful. Lastly is “Junior High Los Angeles” which is a community art space based in LA dedicated to giving space to marginalize artist. It’s because of them that my modeling career truly started and the gratitude I feel towards this organization is boundless .
