We had the good fortune of connecting with Anisa Kelso and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Anisa, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I am from Los Angeles but born in Texas. I was brought up by strong women my mother inspired me to do me to be creative. As a child I played the guitar, violin, did gymnastics, jazz, tap and ran track. Trying everything lets you know you can do anything. Then I discovered design I lived next to a fashion designer and she helped me create a dolls dress then I spent most of my weekends hunting for fabrics in downtown L.A. Being allowed to do whatever excites and ignites you allows you to let your creativity shine. I think all of the things I did allowed me to have no fear of traveling and of letting my design express freedom to be yourself in fashion.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I think my art is about textile creation it might seem strange but sometimes the fabric will help me create a look or a style. I love to create textiles that are artistic. The natural dye process is like a made scientist experiment blending different dyes to create different looks on a textile. Fashion is never easy but the focus of my brand is small batches and making sure that no 2 pieces are the same because no one is like you and your fashion should not look like any other person’s either. So that is what my brand is about it is about being different and not like any other .

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Vegas is not just the strip my favorite place is called Therapy it is a restaurant that is downtown and is the best place for a cocktail and have the chef’s latest creation. Also for a secret haunt it is the Downtown Cocktail Room and Velveteen Rabbit both late night lounges in downtown Las Vegas with great music and local staff. In the morning of course RedRock Canyon a little or a big hike on the weekend to see the sky and some nature on a Pink Jeep tour is just the thing to see a different Vegas Skyline. Then of course the Neon Museum at night to see an artist view of the old Vegas signs it is inspiring. That is a great day or weekend for us. Downtown is an artists dream in Vegas.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I loved the very precise designer that happened to live next door to me in high school. She thought me about design details when she helped me create my prom dress. Although she has long since passed her ripping my seams out and making me do it again and again while not the most fun it was that process that showed me about details and how doing things well is it’s own reward. My sustainable fashion journey came from watching True Coast and the River Blue both showed me to take care in what I create from and how fashion should not be a one day ootd but mixing old and new and not contributing to the through away fashion trend but a new type of classic style.
