We had the good fortune of connecting with Ken Rogers and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ken, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
MY work life balance has improved over time since I transform to the photography business. I used to work in the Corporate America in the management capacity. That took a lot of time away from the family. One of the reasons that I decided to get into my own business was a better time management. This proof to be a correct move on my part.

I believe that it is quite essential to keep a healthy work-life balance to prevent burnout. My mentality is that everyone has tasks that require him/her to finish within certain time frame. My business can afford me to work from home when I am not on set. This help improve the time with the family tremendously.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
When I first started, I thought if I had known how to set up the lights, it would have been all I need to know. I quickly realized that that was only a small part of the photography business. It is more important and much more difficult to create images that are eye pleasing or convey the message. I had to self taught myself about color theory, art theory. I overcame these obstacles by studying other images from the magazines and other famous painters. I also talk to many photographers and adapt some of their techniques that fit my personality.

The lessons I learn are to always be thirsty for knowledge in your field and keep your eyes open for new opportunities. My style of photography is fun and vibrant. I tend to use vivid colors or heavy shadow for black and white images.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My sister came and visited me 2 years ago. She also like landscape photography. I took her to Chinatown to take some landscape photos and had lunch at Hawlin’ Ray’s. She enjoyed her great chicken sandwich. Getty Museum is definitely on my list for an all day event. The restaurant at the Getty Museum is recommended. In-N-Out is also a place that I highly recommended for fast food. The milkshake never gets old for us. Night photography at Joshua Tree National park is a must if you are a star gazer. Lastly, all the outlet malls are always a great shopping place for out of the country guests.

I would like to give a big shout-out to Najee Williams from D Magi Visual Concepts who had helped groom me in the right directions at the beginning stage of my career. Chad Allan from Chadsimages who is always there when I need him.
