Meet Elizabeth Yarwood | Filmmaker

We had the good fortune of connecting with Elizabeth Yarwood and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Elizabeth, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
In my search for balance, it’s been important for me to work with people I enjoy spending time with, on projects that I really believe in. As a mom of a young daughter, I have to make sure I’m prioritizing the work I really care about and am using my time wisely. When I was starting out and getting as much experience as possible, I said yes to almost everything. For me, that was a necessary part of the learning process. It helped me figure out what I wanted to focus on.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a filmmaker who has worn many different hats. The main focus of my career has been my work as a cinematographer. I’ve had the pleasure of working on short films and features (both narrative and documentary), unscripted television, web series, music videos, and commercials. I continue to be fascinated by the intersection of art and technology and cinematography is a great outlet for that interest. I have also served as a producer, writer, and director on various projects. A personal passion project was a web series I created call “LA Picker.” With the help of close collaborators, I was able to bring ten episodes to life. All ten episodes are currently featured on the Boyish YouTube Channel, which highlights content created by individuals identifying as women. I currently direct videos for Wisecrack, a popular YouTube channel, and am an Assistant Professor of Filmmaking at Woodbury University in Burbank.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Los Angeles has a lot to offer and, in normal times, when friends come to town I usually take them to the Getty Center which always has great exhibits, but it’s also fun to have a picnic on the lawn there or walk through the gardens. All visitors to LA usually want to go to the beach and the tide pools at Point Dume are a great choice, especially during the winter months. For a nighttime summer activity, my favorite thing to do is go to the Hollywood Bowl where you can enjoy outdoor music and bring your own food and wine or beer. For food and people watching, Grand Central Market in Downtown LA is great. If visitors are interested in biking, it’s fun to bike along the LA River or Ballona Creek. You can even take the Ballona Creek bike path from where it starts all the way to Playa del Rey and end your bike ride at Playa Provisions, a great restaurant. Another restaurant with amazing architecture and great views of the city is Yamashiro in Hollywood.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family and friends have always been very supportive. My frequent collaborators, Rebecca Louisell and Ashley Maria, deserve a lot of credit for always listening to my ideas, for always encouraging me, and for always helping me to push myself. Rebecca is a writer, director, and producer who has worked closely with me on many different projects over the years. Ashley is a writer-director who helmed the recent feature documentary, “Pioneers in Skirts.”
