We had the good fortune of connecting with David McCullough and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi David, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
I used to think I had to focus on music 100% of the time. I realized I truly needed exercise. I have a tendency towards lethargy (might have a light case of narcolepsy lol) and lifting weights gives me energy throughout my week, allowing me to focus on my music and other tasks longer. I’ve developed a habit of meditating, doing yoga, and lifting that has given me WAY more energy to focus on my craft. Bob Marley played soccer regularly and I’ve heard he used to run up and down a hill before coming into the studio. Staying strong and healthy is key for me. Just to give perspective, I usually meditate for 5 minutes, do yoga for 10 and lift for 15 minutes, all at home. I try to get a heavy workout at the gym for 40 minutes at least once a week. Life changer for me. I definitely aspire to meditate longer, but don’t stress if I’m only able to breathe deeply (through the nose) for a few minutes. Presence positively affects all aspects of life.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started selling weed at 18, as I was working 3 jobs. I was spending so much money smoking and only making $6.75/hr so my money went fast. It’s a long story but one thing led to the other and here I am, 36, with a career as a professional cannabis salesman lol. I work for a great company, pay taxes and thankful to be in an essential industry, doing something I love. I believe cannabis should be legal worldwide and available to anyone who benefits from it. Besides rare medical situations, I think you should refrain from using it as a teenager, it can affect your growth and can always lower your motivation in life. Stay focused! Stay committed to your mission!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in Echo Park. Lot’s of great restaurants to check out. I love going to Angels Point to watch the sunset. I have a 1963 convertible Corvair so I’d take them for a ride down Sunset Blvd to the beach of course. LA has so much to offer and it really depends on the experience you’re looking for. We have great hikes, great bars (spicy mexal margaritas my fave) and everything in between. Lots of hidden gems. El Prado is my local watering hole. Right next door is Sticky Rice, a great Thai food spot.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My dad is a true rockstar and inspired me to play music. He plays the bass and was deep in the San Francisco psychedelic scene in the 60’s. He became a Christian in the early 70’s and left the scene to play in the church. The church gave me my first drumset and my first gigs at 12 yrs old, playing praise and worship music. I’m truly blessed and thankful for this solid foundation, along with my dad’s undying support of my music. We had a piano in the house and I started teaching myself piano at 14. This has been a huge blessing in my life, allowing me to express myself in ways drums can’t.

I also have to give a shoutout to Kenney Werner for his book, ‘Effortless Mastery’ which totally shifted my whole perspective on music. I highly recommend this book to any musician.
