We had the good fortune of connecting with Cheryl Ogden and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cheryl, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Making people feel comfortable in their own skin.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I love creating an image just as much as I love making someone feel great about themselves. A beautiful image that evokes emotion is what I strive for whether I am shooting a corporate head shot, an add for a college website or the hands of a mother that has terminal cancer as a remembrance for her small children. I would say challenges in the late 90’s were that there were very few women in the field. When I would be shooting a wedding in the late 90’s, inevitably men would approach me and ask me very technical questions. Especially at inappropriate times. Like during the cake cutting or during the family photos. I was certain they were just asking to see how much I really knew. I knew a lot. They never tripped me up. I still get challenged. All of the time. But its easier to blow them off now. I am older and wiser.
Older and wiser has made me the photographer that I am today. I am relaxed which enables the customer to relax. That is a huge goal of mine. To make people feel comfortable. The more comfortable my client is, the better the smile. The better the shoot…

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The Griffith Observatory. I have shot inside the observatory for the board and have shot outside for customers. Its a lovely spot.

The Broad Museum. The architecture is amazing and its close to The Disney Symphony Hall and A short trip down Angels Flight and you are at Grand Central Market. I have made this “circle” many times. Its super photogenic.

Trejos Tacos. I am obsessed these days.

Any of the pop up interactive museums. The Van Gogh was great. The Sistine Chapel was very interesting.

The Grammy Museum. Always fun.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to all the female photographers that paved the road ahead of me.
