We had the good fortune of connecting with Billion Godsun and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Billion, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Standing up for Black people has always required taking risks For me it was a matter of not standing by and watching people be hurt or violated
From domestic issues to more systemic injustices, I have always had to take risks to help others because it is still normal for society to violate Black people
It has paid off because we have gradually been able to rebuild a consciouness in our community of looking out for each other

What should our readers know about your business?
The Africa Town Coalition is made up of different Black organizations and individuals who decided to take control of our destiny We once again see Black life, space and businesses under extreme attacks

In addition to our grassroots organizing in the Africa Town Coalition we developed a nonprofit entity known as the Africa Town Enterprise to seize whatever resources are available and to create opportunities for our people

This work has not been easy
We have learned the 1st step is for us to decide to do something about whatever problems exist and then the universe provides us with the path and all that is needed to work it out

The world is shaped by the people
We either sit back and allow others to form it for us or we get involved and add what we want it to become

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Africa Town is the place to be Known to some as Leimert Park, Africa Town is the last thriving Black community in Los Angeles

It is where people can experience authentic Black culture, food, programs, fashion and more

There’s something happening in Africa Town 7 days a week but Sunday is when the weekly African Marketplace and Drum Circle happens
This is a 30+ year festival made up by the community which includes street vendors, live performances and the Drum Church

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have to shoutout the entire Africa Town Coalition, Jenn Laurent and the Leimert Park Village Vendors & the Black community that remains in Los Angeles
