Meet Julaiah | Singer, songwriter, producer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Julaiah and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Julaiah, how do you think about risk?
I firmly believe that great achievements require taking risks. That’s what I’ve been trying to bring into my life recently, especially with regard to creating new music. Playing safe by attempting to keep a similar sound hinders a lot of musicians from progress. If we are confined to just one sound for a long time, our music is going to get stale, and that’s what I happened to experience myself. I’m willing to become bolder in creative process and experiment more with genres. Eventually this only helps you become more aware of your new facets as you’ve got to do something that you’ve never tried before. To me switching comfort zones in music turned out to be a crucial and rewarding experience that contributes to resilient growth.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is always a combination of fresh sound blended with nice and smooth chord progressions and live instruments. Growing up in Russia, I was exposed to more simple music which lacked a variety of genres, rnb and soul were a very rare thing, that’s why it’s important for me to introduce specific elements of this music into mine. You would be surprised by how many ”three chords” songs made tremendous success back in the 90s in Russia. I’m proud to have been able to confront this influence and get past it.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m currently staying in Miracle Mile and the name speaks for itself! Its laid-back atmosphere, pedestrian friendly infrustructure and Art-Deco buildings on Wilshire Boulevard are only a few of the reasons why I am such a fan of this area. Early morning walk through the district has become my sacred ritual so I would definitely take you for a stroll down on South La Brea Ave to grab some coffee at my beloved ‘’Neighborhood’’ coffeeshop. And I would also love to take you for a scenic drive through the hills on Laurel Canyon all the way to Ventura, long known for its many antique and thrift stores. Driving through Mallholand drive in the evening is a must, the air gets even fresher and you can stop by to enjoy the view of Los Angeles.

Shoutout to my fellow musician and producer Mark Evich for always encouraging me to step out of my box and providing me with a fresh and boundless space for creating music.
