We had the good fortune of connecting with Carlos Felipe Silva and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Carlos Felipe, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
Risk taking is a must in the entertainment industry. My name is Carlos Felipe Silva, and I’m a composer and music producer based in Los Angeles. As a business owner and music creator I’ve had to take chances on a regular basis such as working on new projects with limited budgets in order to further my career and expand my network. You see in this industry you never know what your next project could be, so dealing with the unknown becomes the default mode for every composer and other artists. This uncertainty is a lifestyle that’s definitely not for everyone, and the reason why there is so much anxiety in our field. In this industry you are as good as your last project which means that every time you commit to a project you have to treated as your final master piece, but at the same time you need to constantly work and find new ways of communicating your art. One of the biggest challenges in our area is to maintain a constant work flow. Establishing working relationships with other creatives and maintaining them is vital, and the only way of having a career. Every composer has a unique path because there is no formula to make it in our industry. We all need to take a leap faith, and have the patience and work ethic necessary to achieve our career goals.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a music composer and producer for film and tv. One of the things I love about my art is that every project I do is unique, and it has its own set of challenges. My experience growing up in South America was fantastic because I was exposed to different styles and genres of music. I try to incorporate these rhythms and textures from Latin America, and this always creates an interesting palette for my projects. I have been living in Los Angeles for 5 years now, after finishing school At Berklee College of Music in Boston. It has not been an easy journey. As a composer and musician we rarely get stable jobs, so we all need to become entrepreneurs, and create our own opportunities. We have to be resilient and patient because our career requires time to develop professional relationships and to build our brand. During my time in L.A I have learned to approach each project as it was my last, and I have learned to never take any opportunity for granted. I hope my story and my music brings a light, and help to share new perspectives and contribute to the culture of this wonderful country.

Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
The wonderful thing about Los Angeles is that you pretty much have it all. Whatever your interest is you can find the perfect place and group of people for it. I particularly think going to the Hollywood Bowl during the summer, and seeing John Williams live while drinking wine would be a perfect evening out, so I would definitely plan for that. I would also add that surfing and enjoying the hike trails in L.A is pretty wonderful. The dining scene is incredible too. So, I would take my best friend to my favorite Italian restaurants in town such as Sotto on Pico and Terroni on Beverly Blvd.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My family has been a vital support system for my career. All the opportunities that I had early on were only possible because of their love and their dedication. My parents always encourage me to pursue music because they understood how important music was for me, and they knew such a beautiful profession would only bring the best of myself. Us musicians are lucky for we are in constant touch with one of the most sacred and spiritual art forms there is. Dedicating our lives to music is a privileged, and a journey that brings love and empathy above anything else.
