We had the good fortune of connecting with Parish Walker and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Parish, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
Entertainers are the only people expected to do their jobs for free. We all know the stories of well established artists and crooked managers who take advantage of their money, but what many don’t know is most of the time when you’re up and coming a lot of the opportunities are unpaid and only offer exposure.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a creative one question we get a lot is “what type or what genre are you?” and I always find it so hard to answer because there is no one answer for me. In my opinion that’s what sets me apart, my ability to connect with many different sounds which in turn allows me to fully explore myself. I’m most proud of my BFA in Musical Theatre because prior to attending college I had only done Showcases where I performed my original songs I’d never been in a musical in my life so it was a huge adjustment for me. By my second semester I fell in love with it and now incorporate what I’ve learned into my own work. I got to where I am now by preserving through the rejection. A “no” just means to go harder but never to quit. It definitely wasn’t easy for me to adapt that mentality but I overcame the challenge by releasing expectations to the outcome. Throughout this journey so far I’ve learned you have to trust your vision before you can conquer it. I want the world to know that you can always make it and to never compare your success to that of others. It’s a marathon not a sprint!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Some of my favorite places for a little excitement is Downtown Pasadena, the vibes are immaculate! I also love to hang at Venice Beach for all my creatives, Santa Monica Pier for a fun but chill day, and Newport Beach for a straight up calm and classy afternoon. When it’s time to shop I love heading to the LA Fashion district for some quality clothes and accessories at low end prices. a few of my favorite food places in the city for a dressy night out are Island Breeze Jamaican cuisine, Bossa Nova, Palms Thai Restaurant and Gyu-Kaku.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to thank my ancestors, the universe, and anyone who has personally influenced my life. Thank you for being a constant reminder and inspiration to always keep moving forward! You’re the fuel that ignites my passion and I am so grateful for the many gifts that I’ve been blessed with. Shoutout to my big brother Justin for always being my ride or die and number one supporter. Last but not least, thank you mom. It was your old school tunes that made me sure this is what I want to do with my life, I love you.
