We had the good fortune of connecting with Mikey Acuna and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mikey, why did you pursue a creative career?
I remember being in my middle school art class. The assignment was to show expression through the lens of a camera. I remember finding the most breathtaking yet subtle rose in between these other flowers. It spoke to me. In that moment, I felt understood, I felt seen. I was the middle child growing up and so feeling unheard was a constant. That rose was me and I would help it feel seen. And that’s what I want. I want each picture that I capture to feel heard, seen.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I capture artists in their natural state. I capture the long hours in the studio, the grind, the stress, the mental blocks, the breakthroughs. There is something so raw about the moments captured in the natural environment. There is also something so special about being in the space where so many emotions are felt. You feel the frustration, the motivation, the exhilaration. This journey has not been easy. From long hours to being away from my children, this journey has definitely been a rollercoaster. I feel supported and encouraged by my family and friends. I have learned that life is the best teacher. Through living, we experience and grow. That alone, is what it’s about. I want people to know that I am just a regular guy with a dream to help others feel heard and seen through the lens of my camera.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
So much to do in a week, but here are some of the MUSTS when my best friends are visiting. We enjoy going to Aeirloom Bakery in the valley, Trail Canyon Falls, the Dodger Stadium, Staples Center, Banc of California, King Taco, In n Out, and Disneyland. We take a drive up the coast to enjoy the ambience. We most likely spend most of our day in the studio, catching a vibe, and observing the process of the craft.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are two people who I would like to dedicate a shoutout to. My good friend Octavio Danis Jr. has been my mentor in this photography journey. Through his knowledge, guidance and patience, I have learned to become a confident photographer. Because of his encouragement, I am constantly striving to achieve my highest potential. The second person who I would like to dedicate a shoutout to is my friend Jay P. He was the biggest believer and supporter of my dream to pursue photography. Because of him, I have been blessed with opportunities that I never dreamt possible. His passion for his craft as a music producer has inspired me to carry that same passion for my craft.
