We had the good fortune of connecting with TJ Harris and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi TJ, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I think risk is always a part of trying to start something new, as far as this podcast journey the whole thing is kind of based on risk lol. Just deciding to do something we found interesting and figuring it out along the way. I’d say the same thing with life, there’s always an element of risk when you try something new or go for something better.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a podcaster/radio co-host of “JustADopeAssPodcast” and I work in the Mental Health field. I’m currently pursuing my masters in clinical counseling. My co-host and I both work in the mental health field (he’s a therapist) and we wanted to add our voices to these conversations surrounding mental health from the perspective of black men. We try to hold space for serious discussions around mental health and blend in discussions of pop culture as well as just real honest conversations that we might have in the barbershop. We want to blend the world or seeing those in the field as regular people who have regular everyday discussions but also normalizing having vulnerable paradigm challenging discussions as well. As with anything new there have been challenges, being open, putting out our opinions for any one’s interpretation was hard at first and staying consistent with it along with life and schedules was hard in the beginning. I’ve learned the power of consistency and being authentic while doing this, I think we want our brand to represent growth and betterment at the end of the day. We talk candidly about a variety of topics but the goal in the end is for the conversations to spark something and hopefully we all leave them better than when we entered them.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m really a giant homebody lol, most of my friends already know what they want to do when they get here so I just indulge as the chauffeur. But I will say lately I’ve been eating at Tracey’s like they giving it away so as of now they eating Oxtails lol.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My co-host and one of my best friends Darrius “DC” Carter, he’s somebody who has been there with me along this podcast/professional journey and is a huge part of my progression. Everybody that’s a part of The Good News Radio network and my family. They’ve all been beyond supportive and integral to my growth not only as a creative but just as a person period.
