Meet Katya Tal | Sculptor/Stop motion puppet creator/Character designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Katya Tal and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Katya, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Growing up in the great northern city of St. Petersburg Russia, I was influenced by its melancholy beauty and architecture leading to my (near) obsession with fantasy art. My passion and effort to emulate fantastical worlds with unique characters has been key to my brand’s awareness. When I initially began KT Dolls (ktdolls.com) I focused exclusively on unique “one-of-a-kind” art dolls which primarily attracted the attention of galleries in Europe and the States. As I expanded my interests and portfolio, I’ve been fortunate that my art dolls, jewelry, and puppet work for animation have resonated with a broader audience leading to success beyond just galleries.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve been flattered by artists and clients who often have told me that my work feels like it belongs in a Tim Burton or Del Toro film. This association to such great artistic genius is another reason I’ve managed to connect to the community. I’ve been proud of several events where I’ve participated, but perhaps my nominations in Spectrum for 3 dimensional art rank among my high-points. Along the way to some recognition for my work there were naturally some challenges in gaining exposure. Participating in shows curated by great artists such as Chet Zar has dramatically benefited my career. Equally important, being open to learning and collaborating with other artists has been instrumental in my growth. Beyond my personal brand, I want the community of fantasy artists and animators to know how I’m excited to work with them on projects. There are so many brilliant creators with whom I’m certain it would be thrilling to collaborate!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Wow– Well, LA is full of amazing locations to visit. In the current environment, I’d recommend outdoor locations including Griffith Park, the Observatory, and any of the beaches. My favorite beach is “Mothers Beach” in Marina del Rey ideal for paddle boarding and kayaking. Sushi is great all over LA, but particularly in Studio City where you can choose from 10 plus places that will make a discerning fish lover happy. Under normal circumstances, I’d also recommend the top museums such as the Natural History, LaBrea Tar Pits and LACMA.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Simon Lee (https://bigbluetree.com/) has been a fantastic teacher and friend! Bobby Chiu (https://www.linkedin.com/in/bobbychiu/) has been a wonderful influencer in my work. Nathan from the Hive Gallery in Los Angeles (https://hivegallery.com/) has been a consistent supporter of my work. Brooks Ayola (http://linkedin.com/in/ayola) who has photographed most of my work over the years.
