We had the good fortune of connecting with Sandra-Lee Shaw and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sandra-Lee, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The thought process behind starting my own business began with my own journey of self-discovery. I longed for clarity and balance in my own life. Due to a number of circumstances in my life at the time, I was struggling with feelings of inadequacy and self-worth. I re-discovered my Spiritual side when, with my Mom’s guidance, I started using crystals. I wanted to incorporate them into my everyday life, so I put them in products I was using and began to wear them. Using non-traditional healing methods such as meditating with crystals, going to reiki sessions, drinking herbal tea blends and getting rid of toxic skin care products, I found myself in a much more stable place. I realized upon discussion with close friends and other family members that many people have felt like I felt. So, 808 Co was born of necessity. I didn’t feel like any other company at the time took the holistic approach to wellness that I needed to take in order to begin my healing journey, so I created my own one stop metaphysical shop.

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
The journey to growing 808 Co into the successful business it is today was not easy. We are extremely niche, but the more the world changes the more people are opening their eyes to alternative methods of healing themselves. I overcame these challenges with sheer persistence, and while it is amazing to own your own business, there have definitely been times where I’ve questioned trading a 9 to 5 for a 24/7! The biggest lesson I learned was finding balance between my business and personal life. It is a lesson that I sometimes have to re-learn when I find myself feeling extremely drained at the end of a week, but finding that balance is crucial to reducing your chance of burning out. How will you take care of your customers if you can’t take care of yourself?

We offer ethically sourced crystals, smudging and incense, handmade crystal jewelry, body care, herbal blends and essential oil blends. We also offer healing services including reiki sessions, intuitive counseling, and astrology readings.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love to eat with a view, and who doesn’t?! Some of my favorite restaurants to take my best friend to would be KŌST, Momofuku Kojin and Lavelle. We would definitely have to visit Cabana if it was summer at the time of her visit, and we would take the ferry out to Toronto Island. I would then switch up the city views for some amazing nature views. Toronto has the luxury of being just a few hours away from some jaw-dropping national parks, my favorite being Bruce Peninsula with its crystal clear waters and hiking trails for both the inexperienced and well-seasoned hikers. We would of course check out Niagara Falls, a national treasure and hit up the casinos and all of the tourist attractions on Clifton Hill. Every day would be filled with fun!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shout out my mother, Allison Shaw. She has supported me through every aspect of my journey and has mentored and encouraged me through every seemingly wild idea that I’ve had. Many a late nights and longer days we’ve had on the road to success. Without her, and her dedication to her own healing so that her kids could be the best versions of themselves, I’d be no where. Thank you Mom! Also a special shout out to my brothers Devon and Aaron, and my grandparents for their unwavering support and for always pushing me to be great. I love you!
