We had the good fortune of connecting with Aaron Colbert and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Aaron, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
Most people think that being an Entertainer / DJ / Music Director is all about having fun. Anyone that finds out what I do says, “oh wow that must be fun.” Though at times it is very fun, it takes a tremendous amount of energy, determination, will, and thick skin. DJing is not about just playing music, it’s about creating energy, holding that energy, transforming negative into positive, expanding energy, and allowing yourself to be open yet protected. It’s energy work, and it can be overwhelming if you allow it. It’s always amazing when everything is aligned and the night is epic! When things are tough… Like any career, it can be taxing work.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started DJing at a rolling skating rink when i was 15 years old never imagining one day it would be my career. I later put myself through college by working as a barback, bartender, promoter, then manager. I learned the food and beverage & Hospitality Industry. Moving to LA almost 20 years ago, I used that past knowledge and worked for some of Los Angeles’s hottest and hippest establishments. Becoming Head bartender at KOI, Food & Beverage director at The Standard Sunset, then starting my own Entertainment consulting and booking agency (Aaron Colbert Entertainment). Iv’e DJed booked and consulted for brands and venues such as: Skybar, Mondrian, Delano Las Vegas, Bar Marmont, Kimpton La peer, Ogara Coach, Lamborghini, Bentley, Coachella, The W hotels, Virgin Voyages, Oscar celebrity Lounge, NYC Fashion week, LA Fashion Week, and many others. Most difficult part is to keep re-inventing yourself and not becoming creatively stagnant.

Lessons Iv’e learned is to always be your authentic self, trust your instinct, and to have a good team around you that supports you.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We would stay at the Kimpton La peer (where i was the Entertainment Director for 3 years) and have brunch at Conservatory Weho (currently entertainment Director) , dinner at Craigs, tennis in Malibu at Malibu Racket club followed by a lunch at paradise cove or Soho Malibu beach house (where I DJ). Nights in Weho, bar hoping is always fun, since I’m the Entertainment Director at Revolver Bar, we would hit my Varsity Wednesday night. I would also take them to PAlm Springs for a day or two and stay at the ACE hotel. Take them to one of my favorite hikes, one of these is the Tahquitz Trail Creek which has a water fall.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’m so thankful to have an amazing team around me that includes and is not limited to my brother, Rand Colbert. He is a successful Dermatologist with multiple practices and a real estate company that has developed and improved most of his town in Utah. His guidance on business matter has been invaluable.

Secondly Kathryn Schiff, my spiritual teacher, has taught me life changing tools that allows me to be in the world of entertainment but help me stay grounded and keep me balanced.
