We had the good fortune of connecting with R.I.O Sirah the Infinite and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi R.I.O, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Well the first thing is I got very tired of working for other people. Building their dreams up as mine withered away to endless overtime and back breaking physical work for low pay. I use to work for Kmart warehouse in GA where all I did was peel shipping labels until my finger tips were raw, put them on boxes and throw them on a conveyor belt for nearly 10hrs a day with only one day off. The conditions were sweltering heat and dust in the summer, and bitter cold and more dust in the winter. Finally through, a lot of prayer, planning, and sheer disgust of this type of life I started a hand painted earring collection after quitting the job. I worked the job with double overtime sometimes working 12-14 hours a day so I could have extra money to stack up, paying rent off for 3 months in advance. With my last paycheck I bought paint supplies and then I quit that worthless job using my 3 month window to make some money off of the painted earrings before rent came back around a again.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community? What do you think sets you apart from others and what are you most proud of?
Wow. A lot of questions in one ask. Ok well i’ll start by saying the thing that sets me apart from other artist is my imagination and the methodical engineering behind why I create and particular piece. I ponder an extensive series of pieces in my head for months before I ever release anything. This is done while actively creating a art piece prior to the one I’m thinking of. So its a nonstop assembly line of creations. I got to where I am professionally from something I can say in a few words “do what you’re scared to do, if you’re scared to death to do it you probably should do it. From every event I wasn’t necessarily invited to to exhibit my art, to paining on the street corners, to shaking hands and talking with people who were professionally doing better than me in their careers and in life generally is how I started. Was it easy? only if you consider that it will be hard and you are fully invested into understanding that hardships will come, then ye its easy. I overcame these hardships through, one, error, making mistakes, realizing it, learning from them and then doing better. Last but not least prayer, and lots of it, and whole lot of it and a whole lot of tearful nights in prayer. The lessons I’ve learned is that they’re isn’t a saving grace outside your own ambition to get what you want. What i mean is no one is going to just see you doing art on the street and say “hey I want to put this guy in my gallery, wow he’s amazing”. For a long time I had in my head that someone would actively seeing me doing art in public and pluck me up to the hierarchy of greatness because they liked my art. I had to get that fantasy out of my head and do the work. Do the work and be resourceful with your time. I want people to know I’m a messenger, the message is love, the kingdom of heaven and I’m just a vessel to get this message thru. I’m only a artist so that people will listen to me long enough to get the message.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Ha. This will be a bit of a short answer. Because I only go out to events as it pertains to my work, artistic affairs I don’t hang out really. I don’t see the point and I’ve been this way since as long as I can remember. I’ve lived in LA for about 5years and I’ve never even peaked interest to go see the Hollywood sign or do tour rides to the stars. What’s in my head is more fun then the actual experiences around me.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
