We had the good fortune of connecting with Sydney Sievers and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sydney, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Work life/ balance is hard. Never did I think owning a business would be easy, but never did I ever think it would be this hard. When owning a business you are the owner, manager, social media content creator, for me delivery driver, lead designer and the list goes on. When I had my store front I would always work so hard at the store then come home and keep working on the computer behind the scenes and I could tell Dylan my other half would be so thrilled I am becoming so successful but, there was a part that we were missing. I am very good at putting PEACHES first rather than myself. I think when starting a business you are always saying YES to any opportunity and saying YES to any chance where you can create and come up with content and make new connections but it takes a TOLL on you.
Now after closing my store I can absolutely say BALANCE IS KEY, it’s still something I am learning but 100% getting better at. I am in a industry that is so personal we are creating something so beautiful for a special day which leads to clients texting us, calling us all after hours a few months ago I would pick up the phone and talk to clients at 9:00 pm at night… Which now I just don’t answer. I am available between the hours of 8 am – 6 pm and most clients understand and respect that! I would saying being vulnerable and letting clients know these are my hours and STICKING to that will lead to a great balance. Also TREAT yourself.. you can’t just work, you need time to relax and breathe. My favorite ways are shopping and a great massage.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
PeachesFloral.Co is a floral design company. We specialize in wedding & events. What sets us apart from other florists I would say is being an al cart based florist. We don’t offer any packages or require any minimum pieces. We do everything custom so nothing is ever the same. Color palette and vibe might be similar but at the end of each event the floral has its own tie on it! When booking we also make a 5- 10 page visual pdf for our client to look back to. They are all made by me. It takes awhile to make anything but it is all custom, no bride has the same PDF. It’s a complete walk through their day. From flower chat too, mood board, to personal floral, ceremony & reception. The brides we work with and planners can not say enough good things about our PDF !!
I am most proud of how far peachesflroal.co has grown in the past year.. We are only in February of 2022 and I am booking 2023 brides… LIKE WHAT THE HECK ! I didn’t know this is possible nor did I think I would make it this far. I am so excited to carry peaches through 2022 and now 2023!! We are only growing ! I got peaches to grow so fast and naturally by connections with other creators and keeping my head down. You can go on social media and see small business with 56 thousand followers but have 40 likes.. That is called bought followers and not naturally growing and that is something we don’t do. It can be very discouraging to other businesses seeing wow they have not many followers but you always have to see their engagement. TRUST ME WE DON’T WANT THAT. We work hard by building connection with other florist with other small business that want to carry us and we grow that relationship and thrive off social media engagement!! I mean look at Huntington Beach Corner Market. We start by dropping off bouquets to them weekly not to big of a deal right?. Now we drop off a few times a week, we throw events with them, we pop ups on mothers day ( any big holiday) and we SELL OUT !! All about connections and growing with in the community. Just by building connections with Suzann the owner of HBCM we now have her clients that reach out to us directly to order! It was easy for me to build connection, because I am a very perosnal person and I love meeting and learning more about the owner and business. A lesson I I have leaned along the way is don’t compare yourself to another business. Stay true to yourself and always refer back to your goals. If you don’t stay focus on what you want and keep your head down then you will get distracted and not so creative. I want the world to know that It is ok to take risk and it is ok to fail that risk you take, you only become a better owner and business if you take that risk and quit frankly if you didn’t take that risk you would have never know or learned anything with out it!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was here to visit I would defiantly take them to coffee dose a cute spunky coffee shop in Costa Mesa off 17th street. Then I would probably take them more down south to San Clemente. In love with all the Spanish Tiel and vibes they put off. I also would take her to Social Bar and Grill in Costa Mesa. I am a huge Disney fan so we defiantly would be going to Disney. Lastly we would be going to a country bar to be line dancing. Country music is my favorite and I wouldn’t let her leave with out a good time on the dance floor.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Recognizing my love ones would be my shoutout! Not everyone has a family that is supportive as mine! My family is a die hard peachesfloral.co fan. They are my number 1 supporters. Not only did I start peaches on the side of my families house in their tuff shed I also took over the garage, kitchen and living room. The house was always filled with floral, pampas and rubber bands. They had no problem with me destroy a quarter of their living spaces or keeping all my inventory in their shed. I also had clients coming to the house to pick up orders.. it was never a big deal. They enjoyed it, having a successful daughter is one thing but having a successful daughter running their own business at the age of 21 was another!
Also I give credit to my boyfriend, he has a full time job working 80 hours a week & had no problem coming home to strip flowers, make me something out of wood, run to the store with me late at night or even set up my pop ups with me on weekends. I mean that is one hell of a team player… He did all the things I never wanted to do at the time.
Last but not least my sister always stepped up the plate. She never wanted anything to do with floral but when I needed help I always knew she was one call away. She has made many deliveries for me, helped run the store and had also been a model in my shoots when needed. She is still someone I call when my assistant and I need more back up !
Family is absolutely the best and without them who knows where peaches would be at the moment.
