We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexis Renee and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alexis, alright, let’s jump in with a deep one – what’s you’re definition for success?
Success has nothing to do with anything outside of you and the goals that you have set for yourself. A lot times we look to society to tell us what success is and I think that is why there are so many that are unhappy. There are people who spend their lives working to fit the mold of what others want them to be and wonder why they are unfulfilled. We all go through things that make us second guess our capabilities (especially with the internet) but making YOURSELF proud of doing your best is all that you need.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think the thing that sets me apart is that I am so determined to grow and be better at my craft, in every area. It takes years to create a sound and you have to keep developing it over time. the same thing goes for a look, a building trustworthy team etc. I’m always looking at things to see what and where I can improve. That’s what this is all about for me. Growth.

I’ve always been attracted to creative arts whether it was poetry, story telling, comedy, paintings etc. Even though I can’t do all of those things, they give a perspective of what’s going on in the minds of others and I love connecting with people to hear their perspectives. I feel like we learn so much from each other by sharing perspectives, so just taking the time to hear someone articulate their point of view is the best way to learn and apply their experiences to our lives is what helps us grow.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As crazy as it seems, I haven’t been to LA yet. But of course I’d love to hit the Santa Monica pier, Museum of art and some good food spots. I have to make sure I have a good tourist picture with the Hollywood sign in the background (haha). Other than that, I have some really closed friends in LA so I’ll have some good tour guides that will be able to show me all of the low key spots that no one knows about that I would love.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have a lot of people who contribute to my success and have supported me along my journey.

It starts in the home so my parents have always allowed me to be myself and express my my creativity in whatever way I can. I grew up playing sports and my father was at just about every single game (and practice) cheering me on. My mother wasn’t as into sports but she recognized my talent at a young age and was the first to enroll me into sports at the age of 6 and it really helped me develop an identity at an early age.

When I felt like I wanted to quit basketball my senior year in high school, it was a REALLY hard decision for me. I was gravitating more to music and I remember crying so hard because I didn’t want to disappoint my dad. They both were very supportive in my music career from the very beginning. My dad would take my mixtapes to work and sell them for me, my mother sent my music over to BET and was able to get me on 106 & Park. Anything I’ve wanted to do, they were behind me 100% whether they knew much about the field that I had interest in or not.

There are many people along the way that helped along the way and I always mention them in interviews, but I think when it comes to MOST influential, it was the way I was raised and made feel that I could do whatever I put my mind to. I was in an environment that made me feel loved and supported no matter what decisions I made. Those things allowed me the confidence as a shy young girl to push through the discomfort and get through to the other side. Those things are still with me today.
