Meet Sophia Mitchell | Curator & Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sophia Mitchell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sophia, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I wanted to start a business that served truly one purpose and that was to fill in the gap. As a home decor business, I knew that it would be difficult to launch one product at a time, but I also knew that I had a very unique perspective and could bring something rather exclusive to the marketplace. Most importantly all of my designs sought to fill in the cultural gap. I wanted to create a space in design where people of color could see themselves represented.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I consider myself a Marketer by trade, but I’ve often had an inclination to do more with my creativity than often corporate roles in finance would allow. Starting LitBodies, LLC allowed me to design objects that I am slowly bringing to market as I continue to shape the future of my small business. Even after formal training in business, I found that the true test of proficiency is by actually starting a business, when the risks are high and the learning curve moves rather quickly, you are forced to figure things out at a very fast space. I built a product with my very own hands and that was incredibly satisfying. As I start to curate more, I look to partner different artists to bring interesting perspectives to my business. There are definitely highs and lows, especially as you try to find the right audience. Starting a business is a humbling experience, it grounds you quickly, but it is also rewarding in ways I never thought possible.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Honestly I wouldn’t stay local, my favorite city is Edinburgh and I would go in November right before the holidays. I’d take them for Scotch tasting and we would visit the Edinburgh holiday markets, take a drive to isle of Sky and then find some of the most interesting speakeasies for amazing cocktails and bits. Maybe even practice Falconry at Glenn Eagles in St. Andrews.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to thank John Brown, a wonderful sculptor for working with me to create my first sculpture. Not only was my first sculpture beautiful, but it captured the very essence of what it looks like to be represented in places where representation is often lacking.
