We had the good fortune of connecting with SHIVARASA and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi SHIVARASA, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
The art of Deep Work – a term coined by Dr. Cal Newport.

Deep work is “Professional activities performed in a state of distraction-free concentration that push your cognitive capabilities to their limit. These efforts create new value, improve your skill, and are hard to replicate.”

On the other spectrum lives shallow work: “Non-cognitively demanding, logistical-style tasks, often performed while distracted. These efforts tend not to create much new value in the world and are easy to replicate.”

Learning how to cultivate the habit of Deep Work has been the most valuable skill I have developed in my life, because quite literally, to be able to focus intensely on one task is the most valuable skill of the 21st century.

Our focus is currency, and our attention is a commodity being fought for and relentlessly seduced everyday by corporations, advertisers and social media apps.

In addition, it has become the norm to be continuously available for others, and as a result, we suffer even more from fragmented focus and mental fatigue.

Without a clear vision for our days, distraction and shallow work slowly and steadily rob us of our ability to reach our dreams.

With so much stimuli competing for our attention, the most rebellious act is to reclaim our focus by directing it deliberately and intentionally at where we desire it to be.

As an artist, what Deep Work looks like for me, is being creative before I am reactive.
Making a ritual of setting up a distraction-free zone to channel my music and art.

I believe inspiration is not simply a sudden good idea that we think of, but rather a thought that is received by us through co-creating with the Universe, Source, God, whatever name you choose to call the force that unites us all.

The word ‘inspiration’ itself comes from the Latin ‘inspiratus,’ which literally means ‘to breathe into.’ The figurative sense derived from the idea that the divine or ‘spirit’ breathes life into a human.

As artists, our sacred task is to create the atmosphere in which we can receive the inspiration.

This is the art of Deep Work, and this the dominant habit I support my mentees in cultivating in my 1:1 creative self mastery program.

Developing deep focusing through the art of devotion, rather than discipline, has been one of my greatest lesson in my life, and the gift that has set me free over and over again.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I don’t feel like I chose music, it chose me. My fr active choice

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shout out to my mother for always believing in me and giving me wings to fly. And to my father, for always nudging me to strive for excellence, which led me down a path of being a seeker of self mastery and student of life. This relentless seeking has led me to countless connections, powerful allies and mentors that have all supported and uplifted me into becoming the woman I am today.
