Meet Ting Yu | Film & TV editor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Ting Yu and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ting, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I’m from Shanghai, China. I grew up in Shanghai and came to Los Angeles at the age of 25 to pursue film career. Cause you know, for every filmmaker, Hollywood is the dreamland.
I would say my background helped me a lot with my film career. Since I know both mandarine and English, I found my first assistant editing job, which is a Chinese-American indie feature film. I learnt a lot from that one , got my days and joined the Union. And through the connection I made in the film school, I was able to find union TV shows to work on. From then on, I have worked shows like deadliest catch, Ozark, Under the banner of heaven, and a lot more.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As an assistant editor, I don’t really want to stuck on working with one type of show. So I keep trying to find interesting shows to work on.
I am really proud that I have worked on shows like Deadliest catch, Ozark and the show I just finished called Under the banner of heaven as well as The Ice road and Between two ferns, The movie.
It is not always easy for me, since I am not a native speaker. And in the beginning of my career, there were a few times that people did not really want to give me chances because of that. I am glad that I did not give up and after a few shows on my belt, I was able to pick and choose which show to work on.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Day 1: Morning: Newport Beach fish market for breakfast and lunch, shopping at South coast plaza ( since I lived in OC for four years) Day 2: Universal Studio: I work in film industry. So we will have a lot of fun doing the studio ride
Day 3: The broad museum and little Tokyo.
Day 4: Pasadena old town and Cal tech. ( I am a huge fan of the Big Bang theory)
Day 5: Malibu, Santa Monica and the Getty
Day 6: The Academy museum and find a broadway show to watch in Pantages Theatre.
DAY 7: Disneyland

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I think I would like to thank ACE ( American cinema Editor ) and Chapman University Dodge college of film and media arts. I could not keep finding work in the industry without those two. I found a lot of work opportunities through the connection I made in Chapman and though ACE program, I got to know the Dean of AFI and got the chance to teach assistant editing class in 2021 fall semester.
