We had the good fortune of connecting with Sigail Currie and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sigail, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I have always dreamt of owning my own business one day, so it was only natural for me to embark on this journey at some point. Long before Wax on Vine materialised, I used to experiment with the candles I had bought, mixing the scents to make them better. So during my travels around the world, I fell in love with many different scents, herbs, and spices; I decided that this was it, this was the kind of business that I wanted to get into.

I love being creative, and each one of my candles are an expression of such. This is what makes them so authentic. After many years of it being just an idea, Wax On Vine was finally born in January 2020. Luxury in a jar, all hand poured with nothing but the finest ingredients.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Every business is conceived first as an idea; then is birthed from a passion, and fuelled by a drive to succeed. My dream came to fruition in the early onset of the pandemic; where I’ve managed to not only stay a float, but thrive. That is credited to my conscientious work ethic, persistency, and my meticulous attention to details.

What sets me apart from businesses alike is my authenticity. It is evident in everything: from the wax, to the wick, to the jars, the scents, and the packaging. I tend to gravitate towards textured containers; I like the varied designs, and textures. It is able to capture different aspects of my personality. I love the versatility my jars provides. Each candle is uniquely blended with 3 to 4 different scents to create an exotic, calming, relaxing, and addictive fragrance. You can also get creative with your empty jars, repurposing them into anything such as: a candy jar, flower jar, money jar, or anything that comes to mind.  Every different line of candle comes with its own packaging, and labelling, which is very sleek and minimal.

What I find most exuberant is naming the candles! I enjoy this process because it usually stems from memories created from my many travels around the world. The people I’ve interacted with, the places I’ve grown fond of, the fragrances that comes from that particular place/country. All of that gets evoked when I blend the aromas I’ve acquired, and in turn influence the name I give to the candle. Hence, my slogan: ‘creating the link between fragrances and memories.’ So my customers can create their own link with any of Wax on Vine’s many fragrant candles.

My journey so far is anything but easy. Nothing worth doing in life is ever easy, but once you love what you do it’s felicitous. I’ve maintained my place in this market by staying focused, kept searching for ways to appeal to customers. Everyone is a consumer, and as a consumer you have wishes about a product you like: what could have been done to make it better, the contents, presentation, the pricing, and so on. And therefore I am my products’ first consumer, so I change what I don’t like, and tweak it until I feel it’s ready for the actual consumers. You have to believe in what you do and trust yourself despite the challenges that you’ve encountered. Customers determines the longevity of a business. So I like to treat mine well, and let them know they are appreciated through impeccable customer service, giveaways, and offers!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love outdoor activities. So if I had to recommend a place to hike to it would be the Hollywood sign, which is quite monumental.

I like the ‘ LACMA’ museum because it has some of the best contemporary art.

Leimert Park is quite culturally diverse; you can find great cuisine, live music, art, and shopping there. I enjoy eating in an open space, so it’s a great fit for anyone who fancy the same.

Silverlake would definitely make the list. There are a couple of spots where I really enjoy the welcoming atmosphere, food, and service:`Home’, `Bacari’, `Salazar’, and `Millie’s Cafe’.

For an amazing breakfast, and coffee in Hollywood, and West Hollywood, `The Butcher, the Baker, and the Cappuccino Maker’ is the place to be. `Mercado’ for great Mexican food and drinks, and ‘Isabel’ for a more upscale evening out with friends for dinner in their open courtyard.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Since the inception of Wax on Vine I’ve had the love, and support of my friends and family. Thank you all for that, and I appreciate the help you were able to give no matter how small. I want to especially thank my sister Segree Caramellino who has been very instrumental in my decisions and in some things I present. Fabio Cao, a dear friend of mine who was there from the beginning assisting me in my pursuit. Erik Maes, my first time out selling we shared a stall. My dear friend Phillip Chambers for being my legs when mine was absent. And most of all my lovely clientele, for without them, this wouldn’t be possible.
