We had the good fortune of connecting with Mackenzie Dudzik and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mackenzie, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I’m grateful for the pandemic for any reason, it’s for pushing me to start my own business! Pre-COVID, I was just helping a few local businesses here in LA with their social media here and there. But during the pandemic, I saw a need for social media — it’s the way we were all communicating! Suddenly my clients were referring their friends and colleagues, and Social by Mack was (officially) born!
So the thought process was more out of a need for it. I’m lucky to say that my business is referral-only at this time!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I feel like the luckiest person in the world, getting to make a living as a content creator! I always knew I wanted to be a creative, I mean I started as an actress! But I wasn’t sure where I’d end up. It wasn’t until I moved to Los Angeles that I discovered that being a content creator was an actual (and potentially lucrative) career). It took about 3 years of 110% effort 24/7 to get to the point of being a full-time paid creator, and I think that’s the misconception about this job. It’s not as simple as everyone thinks it is, when they’re consuming our content. Content creators wear many hats: producer, set-design, scriptwriter, director, costume designer, editor, PR/agent/manager, creative design team, etc.
Another thing I tell creators who ask me for advice, is you have to really want to do this. You can’t go into this job for the free skincare or clothes. You have to have a passion for developing/creating content, building a social community and also for being an entrepreneur!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Ooooo my favorite question! I absolutely love Los Angeles, and everything about it, so I love giving recommendations. Currently, my favorite spots are The Edmon (a great historic Hollywood spot with the most beautiful bar I’ve ever seen), All’Acqua in Atwater Village for the best Carbonara Pizza, Lily Rose at The Wayfarer DTLA for afternoon tea (my favorite activity) and Alice in Wonderland vibes, La Petit Paris Downtown for an instagram-worthy dining experience and an afternoon exploring the new Academy Museum!
If you’re looking to soak up some sun, grab a picnic basket at head to Barnsdall Art Park’s Hollyhock House designed by famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The elevated park offers great views of Griffith Observatory, the Hollywood Sign, and almost all of LA! If you happen to be in town on a weekend, head over to one of the city’s awesome flea markets for a one-of-a-kind shopping experience (Rose Bowl Flea, Melrose Trading Post, Artists and Fleas Venice).
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Of course! I have a lot of people I’d like to credit…mainly all of the content creators I’ve come across on the internet on my journey. Literally! So much of what I know today is by watching YouTube videos, Googling silly questions, and reading articles/consuming content from other creators. The best way to learn is by learning from someone who figured it out before you, right?
