We had the good fortune of connecting with Joy Orleans and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joy, is there something you believe many others might not?
”Fake it ’til you make it.” I believe that if make it by being fake, you will have to maintain that falsehood to stay afloat. Then you become trapped in a prison of the fake and false. I strive to continuously be my most authentic self, and still ” make it”. There was an interview I did several years that caused several family members to feel second-hand embarrassment due to the nature of the topic and my transparency on the issue. If you start fake you will stay fake and be miserable. Anyone can be anything in 2022, so choose to be yourself!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My music is an accumulation of my experiences, which can be said about most art. What sets me apart is my approach. I like to write music from a place of being completely healed and capable of remembering without regret. In order to discover the type of music I was meant to write and how it would change the world, I had to step back from music for years. I started singing, performing, and touring at the age of thirteen. Within that, I built up a musical versatility in lieu of emotional experience. In my musical hiatus, I experienced a myriad of life events, birth, death, marriage, and divorce. There came a breaking point where music began to explode out of every situation. I discovered myself, who I was and what i wanted contribute to the world. I could finally relate to the people around me, and share my healing with them.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The thing I love most about Los Angeles is the weather, so assuming this trip takes place at any time other than the short winter season, I’d aim for lots of outdoor activity.

Hermosa beach instantly comes to mind when I think of places I’d take someone touring Los Angeles, because it’s not as common in popular media.

I also love the Santa Monica Pier and in the same area is a little gelato shop called Dolcenero that I literally went to every day of the summer. In the same strip is a great vegan Thai shop called Thai Vegan that knows me by the order that I get every time ( Panang curry only bell pepper and brown rice with extra green onion).

In little tokyo is a ramen place called Rakkan Ramen with killer outdoor seating and right across the street from the plaza. The spicy garnet with chili oil is fabulous. If you cross the street, walk all the way through the plaza and keep to the left, there is a little boba and ice cream shop that I love.

There’s so much to see and do and eat and so much culture here, so exploring is always a possibility.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to thank Ms. Shirani Rea of Peaches Records for her undying support and for always believing in me. She is a pillar in New Orleans and a constant source of encouragement for me.
