We had the good fortune of connecting with Kamajhia and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kamajhia, why did you pursue a creative career?
I’ve always been creative since I was a kid. Growing up, I would draw and paint, perform in talent shows and plays, and played violin, but my love for Acting grew so much more. I was a Performance Theatre major throughout middle school and high school. I trained in many aspects in theater to enhance my skills to my talent. However, there was a moment when I wanted to give up acting because it felt like I wasn’t going anywhere with it. Until the day I did my jury scene in 10th grade. After my jury scene, my theater teacher Dr. Anthony told me “You need to take acting more seriously.” When she said that, a light bulb lit and I became passionate about acting again. While pursuing acting, I’ve developed more skills in different areas which are Writing, Directing, Dance, and Photography. Those artistries have built a foundation on my craft as an artist. To this day, the little kid in me is driving the steering wheel to keep flourishing my art.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My experience from the arts, led me to put my creative process onto paper. Last summer, I created a short film about a woman trying to break societal standards. After releasing it, a moment of truth hit me and realized this is what I should be doing. I’m usually not the type of person who opens up about a personal struggle, but getting out of my comfort zone is the only way to grow and build character in the future. The unexpected positive feedback I got from the short film felt like a sign of hope. It empowered me to be even more passionate about creating my own work. As I create new projects, I tend to learn new things along the way. I started to explore and experiment with my creativity. I go through magazines, watch music videos from the 80s/90s, and listen to music from the old school era. I realized that creating is my form of escapism. In the years of writing, acting, dance, directing, and more on my list, I never really took ownership of how creative I can be as an artist. I take a step back and I’m like WOW, I’m impressed with the work I’ve done so far! I’ve learned that the process of what I want to create takes time. I encourage upcoming young artists to not stay in a box. To this day, I roll through the stills in life by evolving my creativity. No matter what direction, I still develop into someone greater.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Balboa Park in San Diego, California is one of the best places to visit. The view, environment, and atmosphere is remarkable. I love seeing families walking around the buildings and taking memorable pictures. Friends having picnics on the chill grass. Art museums showcasing history of different cultures. When I visited Balboa Park for the first time, I was in awe. The place is so mesmerizing, it felt like I was surrounded by art everywhere I turned. I brought my camera with me and took tons of photos. When you’re in Balboa Park, you’re in the moment and that’s a beautiful moment to be in.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to give a shoutout to all my past acting teachers for teaching me great effective skills to be a true artist. My mentors for believing in me and trusting my vision along my journey. My mom for being the biggest cheerleader in everything I do. Also, I would love to give a big shout out to Dr. Anthony for passionately telling me to not give up acting.
