We had the good fortune of connecting with Kalyn Fultz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kalyn, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I went skydiving for the first time recently, it taught me a powerful lesson. Take the leap of faith and the world will open up to you. I can’t tell you how many times I didn’t do what I wanted or say how I felt because I was scared of the risk. Both in my personal life and professional. Overtime I realized that growth and prosperity comes from risking your comfortability.

For a long time I searched for a way to express my creativity. When I decided to write comic books I didn’t know where to begin. I had to risk the unknown if I wanted to find fulfillment. I was scared at times that I was undertaking something that I didn’t know if I could finish but I learned that the best things in life are on the opposite side of fear(shout out Joey Bada$$)

In the beginning, I would think “What if they don’t understand?” or “They’ll think Im a nerd”. That sort of thinking was not going to bring me the success I was searching for. I started ignoring those thoughts at the risk of being judged. I continued studying and continued creating. At the end of the day, this is a passion for me. Im doing this for me. If someone doesn’t like it or I don’t get that Netflix deal then so what? I created it, I completed it. Its my achievement and that is more than enough.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Im extremely excited for the next couple of months, Ill be releasing my first comic book, titled “SHADE: Shadows Never Die”. Published through Greenbyrd Comics! That will be available early fall. I’ve worked in a comic book shop so Ive had a chance to see all sorts of different stories. Most mainstream comics have lost what drew me to this world, and that’s hope. If I can add a little shred of hope to someone that reads my stories then I think thats success in itself. Getting to this point was not easy but it was fun. I stayed focused on learning this craft and studying other writers, not just comic book writers either. Hunter S. Thompson, Neil Gaiman and Kieron Gillen, just to name a few. Through this journey I’ve learned to be patient with the creative process. Also everyones process is different so collaborating with other artists will bring out different aspects of your creative energy.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Start the week off by checking out the Zone Comic book shop. Its a hub of everything pop culture. Not far from there is Cherokee park thats has great trails and plenty of activities. After working up an appetite we’d get drinks and pizza at DiOrio’s Pizza & Pub. Waterfront Wednesday is a must. During the summer the last Wednesday of month we have free concerts on the riverfront. We would catch the show from above on the walking bridge, a pedestrian walkway that runs from either side of the Ohio river. Thursday I’d show off the art scene. We’d check out the Speed Art Museum then head to 21c Hotel and Museum. Gran dinner in the 21c at Proof on Main with their unique and modern cuisine. Friday I’d take my friend to check out the Waterfront Botanical Gardens. We’d spend our Friday night at Hell or High Water. At this speakeasy, you’ll feel transported to the era of prohibition, with an aesthetic and drink menu to match. Saturday breakfast at Highland morning. We’d hit Muscle & Burger bar for dinner then head to Bardstown road to hit the local bars. Finally we’d catch brunch on Sunday at O’Shea’s.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Greenbyrd Comics. They gave me chance and helped me tremendously in the development of my comic book.
