Meet Jen Hershey | Licensed Therapist, CEO + Founder of How We Get Thru, LLC.

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jen Hershey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jen, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
The How We Get Thru app is all about helping self-help seekers go from endless googling about their anxiety to curated, short courses at their fingertips. The app is the masterclass of the mental health world. Subscribers have access to unlimited courses that are only 30 minutes which come in audio and transcript form to fit their lifestyle. The app has additional features such as workbooks designed for each course, curated profile so you get what you need, a mental health directory, and a journal section.
Another focus of ours, was to support the mental health professionals that have equally been burning out these last few years. As a mental health therapist myself, I saw the need for additional resources to help people get thru the many layers of life outside of the therapy room. The pandemic had forced us all to recalibrate in meaningful ways but also caused a lot of stress about the future. In my own life, I was burnt out from holding my client’s experience while trying to process my own. I needed more support, and my client’s needed more support. There was a glaring gap between therapy sessions and legitimate resources that could continue the value of being seen and understood.
That’s when the How We Get Thru app was created. The app innovates self-help thru courses from REAL mental health professionals, when and where you need it. We are on a mission to create spaces for healing, self-reflection, and mental health support, one course at a time.

What should our readers know about your business?
What makes our app different is that it is one stop shop for all things mental health. We want to help people cut out the noise and be able to have a clear path thru their problems. Our mission is two-fold, support subscribers mental health while equally giving back to the therapists. We care a lot about healing and pointing people inward to uncover the answers that are right for them AND we believe all therapists have unique giftings in the way they connect and heal others.
We are also a wife and husband team with two kids under 4. The idea of the app began in the “think tank” aka our kids’ backyard trampoline. The concept of the app felt easy; create a platform where therapists could plug and play their courses to help the masses feel supported, seen, and equip them with the tools to get thru. But the actual building, researching, and creating the app felt way out of my scope. This is where my husband came in and is the reason we have an app to launch. His skills to problem solve, research, and create content have been the other heartbeat of our business. We never thought our two industries would have collided like this!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We live in Orange County and there are a lot of fun things to do.
Beach Day! Our first stop would be to Boil & Bake (Amazing bagel shop) in Costa Mesa on our way to Crystal Cove Beach. This beach is tucked away so it isn’t over crowded and has a lot of space to lay out and watch the waves. It also has a restaurant and a walk up bar where we could get some mimosas.
Sip N’ Shop! We would next visit a small city that holds a lot of memories for me. Right next to a college campus is “the circle,” located in Old Towne Orange. This used to be my old stomping ground in College and where I met my husband, years later. It is a great place to grab a coffee, shop in boutique stores and people watch from a dreamy bench near the fountain which is in the middle of “the circle” A great place for dinner Osea where the corkage fee is paid by sharing a glass of wine with another table. After dinner we would do the “Ol’ College Tour” consisting of 3 of the dive bars that have been a staple for that area. Since we are all parents, if anyone yawned during our time out, I would quickly yell “espresso martini!” to remind you to get it together.
Next up, Disneyland and California Adventure. This choice seems obvious but as pass holders, I can attest to the magical experience that they both hold. Since we go often, we know how to get the most of it, what to splurge on and what to pass on.
Shows and Concerts! There are a ton of venues around Orange County for a chance to see musicals such as Wicked or Hamiliton, at the Segerstrom Center of Arts in Costa Mesa. And if musicals aren’t your thing, we could always catch a Death Cab for Cutie show at the House of Blues.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
