Meet Kyulee Choi | Composer, Orchestrator, & Singer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kyulee Choi and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kyulee, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
– One of my favorite affirmations is “Problems are my opportunities”. I know life is hard and it will not ever be easier because we face a lot of problems in our lives. However, most of people try to avoid their problems because it is painful. I also used to avoid my problems to be away from the pain it gives me. The moment I realized that I cannot be free from the problems until I face them and fix them, I started considering all my problems as my opportunities to learn and grow. On that day, it changed everything. Since then, every time I have a new problem, now I automatically think about how much I can grow or what I can learn from the process and it gives me the power to go through.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My musical journey started early. I started playing piano when I was 7-years-old and I also learned flute and singing afterwards. I was a singer-songwriter in South Korea and as my musical interests grew into media music, I decided move to the United States to pursue my passion and dream in media music.
When I relocated to LA for the first time, it was not easy at all. I did not know how to make connections and where to seek opportunities. First thing I did was getting out of my comfort zone. Taking risks. I knew that I cannot earn anything If I stay the same. Eventually LA allowed me to meet great composers and I was able to contribute to TV shows and movies so far, such as The Eight and The Woman King.
What I have learned so far is that I need to be the best version of me everyday for myself and people who believe in me and love my music. I always think about what kind of musician/person I want to be. Secondly, It is definitely difficult to get into the industry for the first time, but there are always people who are willing to help other people out, so do not be afraid of stepping out of your comfort zone!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I haven’t been living in LA for many years, but I know some good spots! I would take my friend to Griffith Observatory (definitely my happy place) for hiking and Saint & Second for dinner. If my friend is also down for some Korean food, I would take him/her to Daedo where is a fancy KBBQ restaurant that I love!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
– I want to give my first shoutout to my parents who always support, believe, and love me in any conditions. They are my absolute inspiration. My loving father always gives me endless life-advices and my talented choreographer mother showed and taught me how we should treat our art and what direction I should go with my music.
– My second shoutout goes to Joy Music House which is a female-lead business in the music industry, based in LA. In the team, we have composers who are supporting other composers.
