We had the good fortune of connecting with Sage Polaris and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sage, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
When I first started my copywriting business, I quickly became my own worst boss. I would have given anything for my business to succeed so I put in a lot of hours and even brought my laptop on vacation. I could tell it hurt my husband’s feelings so I vowed to stop doing that.

I think it’s natural to want to give anything for your business to succeed and nothing is in balance. Now that I’m 10 years into my business I am able to take 4 months off every year for the 7th year in a row. I started off slow in the beginning with fun Fridays where I would take one day a week off. Then I started to think about what systems I could put in place to take even more time off. My project manager really supported me in coming up with the plan for more time off and now it’s a natural part of how I create more balance in my life.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I started my business in 2012. At the time I was working for all the major museums in Los Angeles installing art. There was a distinct moment when I knew I couldn’t continue working in that industry.

I had applied to work full-time at one particular museum. Then as I was walking down the hallway of the museum I overheard the department manager at the time say he would never hire a woman. It was heartbreaking and it’s also what lead me to start my own business.

From that moment forward, I decided that I was bigger than one man’s bias and I could create more opportunities for myself outside of that industry. So when I started my copywriting business and over time I started to earn more from my online business in a single month than I could make in an entire year working at the museum I knew I made the right choice.

Now one of my goals is for every woman to have the potential to outearn every man in her life. It’s not about competition, it’s about choices. When women have more wealth they historically put that money back into their community and it’s the deeper reason why I work with my private clients and the folks who join my copy template membership.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My week-long trip would start at Ponte Vineyard Inn in Temecula with dinner at the Ponte Winery and then a sunrise balloon ride the next morning. And of course wine tasting at my favorite spots including Wilson Creek to drink their dessert champagnes.

Then we would pop over to Palm Springs and stay at the Korakia Pensione. There’s swimming, an outdoor movie theater, and an awesome hike to a waterfall in Tahquitz Canyon. At night we could sit around the fireplace and soak up the beautiful weather. It’s the most dreamy in the spring and fall. I often take my VIP Day clients to these locations and it’s my absolute favorite way to get them out of their typical environment so we can think more creatively about their business growth.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I learned a lot about copywriting from a book by Peter Bowerman called The Well-Fed Writer. I’m also a part of a paid membership called We Should All Be Millionaires by Rachel Rodgers and that community constantly encourages me to show up and reach for more in terms of revenue.

Mostly I want to shout out my mother Mary because she’s been an entrepreneur since the 1970s and whenever I have a business question I can always ask her for advice.
