We had the good fortune of connecting with Raoul Bubber and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Raoul, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk is something that most people fear in life, including my own. The idea of having to make a potentially rash decision in a split moment is a very jarring one. However, if it involves something that may make one’s career, it’s a risk that one would probably regret not having made for the rest of their lives.

In my case, soon after graduating from the School of Visual Arts in New York, I was suddenly presented with the opportunity to Co-Direct the Official Visualizer for late rapper Juice WRLD’s ‘Already Dead’; a posthumous release of one of his songs. I was told I had one week to have it conceptualized, storyboarded, animated and completed. I was also told I could gather my own team, which I did quickly. Making the decision in the minute I had to accept the project felt almost like an outer body experience, where I felt I needed to push myself over the edge and say yes to the project without letting myself think. I finished pre-production and gathered my whole team within the first day, briefed them on the second, and had the project handed in a day early, on Day 6.

It was a risk which I appreciate that I took every day. I feel it’s so important to know if a risk outweighs the reward, and to know when the reward makes your risk feel an inspiring memory

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Art, Design, Animation, Film and Games have been my passion since I was little. As a ten year old, I began teaching myself how to use Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator to supplement the tools I needed to express my vision. At age fifteen I was privileged in having my logo design being chosen as the mascot representing my high school sports team.

In 2017, I was accepted as a student in School of Visual Arts in New York and have since received a BFA Degree for having completed my Thesis in Animation in the Class of 2021.

Post my graduation, I worked as the Creative Director and Brand Manager for an upcoming photographer. More recently, I Co-Directed the Official Visualizer of ‘Already Dead’ by late rapper Juice WRLD for Grade A Films and Interscope Records. It has since received 11+ Million Views on YouTube. While this gave me immense experience in being a Director and assembling/managing my own team, it also taught me to find harmony between the various art styles that individuals on my team possess and the importance of balance and proper scheduling.

Through my understanding and study of various art styles through Graphic Design, Illustration, Animation, Film .etc , I enjoy translating concepts through those styles using aesthetic choices, artistic reasoning and mastering the tools that technology and software offer.

I believe that the most effective way to improve as an Artist, is to expand my horizons and to understand how different styles and mediums can be brought together efficiently and seamlessly, creating one unique aesthetic for each project, or to understand and replicate desired art styles.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Living in New York has been the ultimate cultural experience. It’s one of the main things I think people need to experience to it’s fullest!

I would highly recommend K-Town! There’s two spots that are my go-to’s, they’re Itaewon Pocha, and Pocha 32. Itaewon Pocha has mind blowing food and drinks, and Pocha 32 has the best Soju I’ve ever had! They serve it in a whole watermelon/ melon or pineapple!

Also would definitely recommend checking out Alphabet City on Avenues A and B, and also Saint Mark’s Place in East Village! Great spot to find restaurants and bars around the area.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family and friends continue to support me through my journey through so many different aspects in my life I can’t begin to describe.

My mother, Geeta Bubber has inspired me my whole life as an artist. She sparked my passion for art from the time I first saw her art as a little kid.

My fellow artists and friends have inspired me along every step of my journey, and learning from their experiences and perspectives within art have continued to push and guide me further down my own path.
