We had the good fortune of connecting with Torry Hermann and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Torry, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
Many people believe that content creation and comedy are the easiest things one can do. Sometimes when I tell people Im busy, they always go: “Busy with what? You literally just post silly videos!” I dont blame them. You dont think about how much effort was put into something that makes you laugh – its just how it is. Creative process is honestly a lot of work and you also have to remember about the money making part of it. You always have to be on trend, finding new ways to make people laugh and thats amazing but I do see how many still dont really think of comedy as an actual job 🙂
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I consider my work the art of making fun of everything. Two years ago I was selling cars and stuck in what most would agree was a dead end job. I originally tried to use social media as a creative outlet by making car review videos. Needless to say my review of a 2001 Dodge Caravan didn’t go viral.
Most people think that being a full time social media influencer is a dream job, or that it consists of just taking selfies on the beach. In reality, it took a lot of trial and error to find something that the audience loved, that I also was passionate enough about to put my heart and soul into producing. For me, that ended up being comedy that is most appreciated by people with immigrant parents and families, and comedy about relationships.
Since I started, my goal is to produce at least one video per day. In the past two years, I have produced over 800 videos. It definitely was not easy, and doesn’t get any easier as time goes on. One lesson I have learned along the way, is that not every video is going to go viral, and that’s ok. If I produce 7 videos in a week, usually one will get over a million views. The key is consistency.
I have also had to learn to deal with the fact that the videos that I usually find the funniest, usually don’t go viral. And sadly, the ones that are short, stupid and easy to share, have the most success. So as a creator you have to balance between what the audience wants and what satisfies you creatively.
One thing I want the world to know about the brand I have built, is how grateful I am for every single person that has ever watched, liked, shared, or left a comment on any of my videos, and how thankful I am to all the wonderful brands and partners I have been able to support so I can continue living out my dream of being a full time comedian.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m a girls girl so the first place my friends and I are going is strait to the salon and the spa (with our husband’s credit cards, of course).
I just moved to Southern California from Vancouver so it has been a big change from rainy days in nature to sunny days in the city.
If I could take a full week off and just take a trip and explore, I would definitely start with the beautiful beaches in Orange County. I love going for a walk through the downtown area of Laguna Beach and driving up the coast through Corona Del Mar, Huntington, and the South Bay area like Manhattan Beach, Redondo etc. I love being close to water.
LA also has so many fun things to do and see. I would suggest everybody who appreciates the history of the creative arts to spend some time at The Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood, and walk up and down the Walk of Fame. For me, no week long trip to Southern California would be complete without a visit to the Santa Monica Pier and an ocean side sunset dinner in Malibu.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband – Vito Glazers – who is the most supportive and incredible man and who happens to be really behind a lot of my success.
