We had the good fortune of connecting with Debra Mittler and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Debra, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I’ve always known deep in my soul that I’m here to assist others in their healing and bring more peace and LOVE to the world, however, first I needed to go through things like struggling with eating disorders, having anxiety, depression and being suicidal.
First I needed to experience what it was like to go from self hatred and doing self abuse and self sabotage to feeling at ease, allowing myself to follow and experience my heartfelt dreams and love and accept myself unconditionally.
First I needed to go through my own healing from my traumas and deep shame, help my inner child feel LOVED and safe and experience who I was behind the mask I was wearing, who I am naturally.
Living in the loving is more than a business, it’s a calling, it’s something that happened naturally as I got more connected to the truth of me and I got a clearer vision of why I’m here and my mission and purpose.
My mission and purpose expands more than just working with clients, I’ve written numerous books and I often write and share inspiring articles and quotes on facebook that helps people have a greater understanding on how to experience inner peace, do inner healing and learn how to be with themselves and others in more kind, compassionate and loving ways.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart from others is I share with my clients what has helped me in my healing. After 23 years of going to therapy, in hospitals and treatment centers and still struggling with eating disorders, anxiety and depression, I knew something was missing. That something was having a deeper understanding of what was creating the symptoms I was having.
Just talking about things and putting me on medication never changed my symptoms or how I felt about myself, others and life in general. I experienced traumas as a child, I never felt safe and “I needed” coping mechanisms to get through the day.
Nothing changed until I took my healing into my own hands and started going deeper into my fears, pain, guilt and shame and started healing the unresolved issues that happened from my childhood traumatic experiences. I work with what’s going on internally rather than just doing symptom relief.
I’m most proud of myself for getting to where I am today and it brings me great joy to share what has helped me with other beautiful souls. It hasn’t been an easy journey, however, I’m grateful for all my experiences, because of everything I’ve been through I have a greater understanding of what it’s like to experience deep pain and suffering and living authentically and experiencing LOVE and inner peace.
I’ve overcome many challenges both personally and professionally like wanting to give up when things got hard and my business slowed down, but what I’ve learned as an entrepreneur is that it’s part of the process and to keep on following what’s in my heart.
I want the world to know that we can learn how to have a more kind, compassionate and loving relationship with ourselves and others; that we’re each beautifully unique, valuable and lovable no matter what we’re experiencing on our life journey.
I want the world to know that living in the loving, which is my brand, was created to remind people of their loving essence and in the healing is the loving, in the loving is the healing.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I LOVE venice beach, there’s always something fun, entertaining and exciting happening. It’s a very accepting and beautiful area. We would eat at the boardwalk cafe because they have a variety of great food and we’re sitting right on the boardwalk where we can people watch and have a view of the beach.
On friday or saturday night I would take them to kaoroke at backstage in culver city. It’s a fun place where everyone cheers you on when you sing.
Some of the most fun, interesting and exciting places or things to check out are the santa monica beach and pier, the grove, west hollywood area, hiking at temescal canyon and I LOVE going to the farmers markets in culver city and venice.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I will always remember my friend EG who walked up to me at a 12 step meeting and said “I can help you” and I laughed in her face and said “No one can help me, I”m doomed.”” She gave me her number anyway and something in me told her to call her the next day. I”m so glad I did, she has been my biggest supporter and friend, she never judged me for struggling with the eating disorders, anxiety, depression and just having a hard time living.
I would call her daily to check in and cried with her, and I will always remember and be so very grateful for the space of unconditional LOVE and acceptance she held of me and for me. She wouldn’t try to change how I was feeling instead she would say “I know it’s hard right now, I”m here for you, you’re not alone.”
Some people say no one will LOVE you until you LOVE yourself, well, her LOVE for me helped me feel like I mattered. I was in therapy and numerous hospitals and treatment centers for over 23 years and no one ever treated me with the love and care that she did. Her LOVE helped me to want to love and take care of myself and it was the beginning of my true healing.
