We had the good fortune of connecting with Max Greenberg and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Max, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Stoggles was initially conceptualized in May of 2020, just as the COVID-19 pandemic was widely spreading across the country and Dr. Fauci was recommending that the public avoid touching their eyes. My co-founder, Rahul Khatri, and I—being veterans of the fashion eyewear industry—saw a unique opportunity to add value to the newly vacant space. We thought the existing safety eyewear options on the market were unattractive, hyper-masculine, uncomfortable, cheap, and poorly branded. The solution we came up with was a carefully designed, stylish yet highly effective product made of prescription friendly, lightweight, and durable polycarbonate lenses with anti-fog coating.

The first iteration of the product, which came to market in February 2021, was designed with healthcare professionals in mind. With hundreds of thousands of pairs sold since launch, you would be hard pressed to enter any healthcare environment without seeing a pair. It’s essential eyewear for essential people and a little bit of style and self expression goes a long way!

What should our readers know about your business?
We’re at a unique point in our journey as entrepreneurs to bolster our mission of fundamentally changing the way people perceive protective eyewear. We hope to inspire the importance of everyday eye protection and even created a tagline, #LoveYourEyes, which has really served as the foundation for much of our decision as a company to reimagine preventative eye care.

At Stoggles, we place a large emphasis on our design and style which makes us unique. We’re the one of the only DTC companies that offers an entire product line that is ANSI-Z87 certified and the first certified safety eyewear that is prescription friendly. This was a key detail for us when we first launched because our products were initially being used by frontline workers in the earlier days of the pandemic.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I just recently moved out of Pasadena after 9 years, so the East side of LA is where I feel most at home. For daytime activities, I love Huntington and Descanso Gardens. Even just a walk around the beautiful tree-lined streets of Pasadena is wonderful. For a great burger, Lucky Boy on Arroyo never disappoints. It’s a short drive from Pasadena to Downtown. I would start a night with HandRolls from Kazu Nori and then make my way to the Arts District, where I’d recommend the cocktail bar, In Sheeps Clothing.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The Stoggles community has been the bedrock of the brand since inception. About 80% of our consumers and following are in the healthcare industry. In our eyes, no amount of shouting-out is enough to express our gratitude toward these individuals. Day in and day out, medical professionals–including doctors, nurses and healthcare workers–care for their communities with compassion and skill.

We understand firsthand how much the healthcare system relies on medical professionals, and that’s why it’s critical to keep them protected and cared for as well. We’re currently celebrating local LA medical professionals with a 5-week healthcare campus tour to provide free coffee and donuts! It’s just a small token of appreciation for their resilience while keeping communities safe and healthy.
