We had the good fortune of connecting with Drew King and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Drew, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve always loved the art of photography, but in order to monetize it, you need to start a legitimate business. You can always do photos for people and ask for money, but if you want to start working with companies and larger entities, you need tax information. Also it feels good to say you’re a company and you own your work
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart is the way I like to look at colors. I like to pull everything I can get out of each photo I take so I want you to feel the hues when you look at my work. When you see my videos, my big thing is making seamless transistions. I want all of your focus so I try to make everything easy on the eyes. It’s not easy trying to separate from the rest of photographers, but I learned that collaboration is more important that competition (thanks Erin). I shoot Venice Basketball for the past couple years and I’ve met so many great photographers and videographers and everyone is humble and we share tips and tricks. The community is everything. If I am too busy for a shoot I reach out to my Black With No Cream family and put them on.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Hmmmm. Jinya Ramen bar is my favorite place downtown to eat. The Jinya Buns are addicting. I’m a speakeasy kind of guy so I like Bathtub Gin, Blind Barber, Lock & Key. I’m looking to try Break Room 86 next. Leimert Park also has some of my favorite foods. I only get Jamaican food there. The homies and I all meet up at Continental Club twice a week for the vibes
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are a few people who have helped me along my journey. Joshua Meekins, my best friend and filmmaker, put me in my first ever commercial and gave me opportunities to work on films and always has been someone with a wealth of knowledge and humility. Blake Lynch got me in front of my favorite artists and trusted me to curate amazing videos and photoshoots for high profile artists and brands (Puma, Nike, Sneaker Villa, etc). My family and girlfriend also support all the traveling and work I put into my craft. My guys (W2L and East Coast West) who always post my pictures to their platforms when they dont have to (too many to name haha). And to everyone who tells me when I’m out how much they love my work it keeps me going
