We had the good fortune of connecting with Brynn Evida and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brynn, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
Although I feel like I am constantly learning and growing as my career progresses, I think the most important lesson I’ve learned along the way is how to be consistent. In any creative field, consistency can help personal and professional growth faster than most other skills. Whether it’s setting consistent goals for your social media and sales initiatives, or providing a consistent image of yourself when collaborating with others, consistency is key.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a music photographer and publicist with a degree in the music business. Since I was 13, I would bring my camera to any venue that I could get it into. The goal was always to capture moments from performances that felt ethereal, as that was how I felt when I would look at photos some of my favorite music photographers took. I remember seeing Jake Chamseddine’s photos for the first time and getting chills. Partially because he is incredible at capturing these moments, but another part of me was obsessed with the idea that you could make this your career. How could anyone be so lucky to get to go on tour and take photos of concerts for a living?
I am 19 now, and I am living in Los Angeles shooting shows and doing PR work for 59 X Records. I sped up the process of graduating high school and college, and I don’t regret this, but it was not easy. Graduating so early posed a lot of challenges with money and self-discipline, and now that I am fully graduated I am also feeling pressure to prove that I can accomplish the goals I’ve set and still support myself independently. Anyone who lives in Los Angeles knows that feeling well.
Stability is a feeling I really value, partially because it can be rare in my career path. I’m also in a place where the opportunities my photography brings are growing exponentially. I’ve gotten to photograph some of my favorite bands within the last couple of months, including My Chemical Romance and Twenty One Pilots. They were both overwhelming experiences, but I was so grateful to have them. I’m at a point where I can set higher goals now, and so I’m trying to do all of these things while prioritizing having grace and appreciation for the people supporting me.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Los Angeles is such a special place with wonderful culture and diversity. I spend a lot of my time in Echo Park, as the park itself is gorgeous and the neighborhood has peaceful places to work. One of my favorite spots is Stories Book and Cafe. I spend so much time editing photos there that I should probably start paying rent!
We are also lucky to have some of the best places to eat, such as Miceli’s in Hollywood. Beyond their incredible food, the atmosphere in Miceli’s is perfect, often including a live pianist and singing wait staff for entertainment.
Much of my time is spent at these places or volunteering at local dog rescues like Angel City Pit Bulls if I’m not working. I’m so glad that I’ve settled into LA and now feel like it is my home.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am so grateful for my industry mentor, Ami Rogers. There isn’t anyone else in my life whom I think deserves recognition more than her. As a human, she is thoughtful, motivated, kind, and virtuous. These characteristics also manifest themselves in her business life, as I’m sure that all of the artists she manages and the people she works with would agree. She works tirelessly and selflessly to help others achieve success every day.
Since I was a young teen, Ami gave me opportunities to explore my passion for the music business, and she has since given me the chance to learn and grow as an adult. She has watched me mature, and the fact that she has been willing to let me grow up and work with her is rare. I’m lucky to have her as my patient teacher in an industry that can sometimes be unforgiving.
