We had the good fortune of connecting with Bryan Nowak and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Bryan, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Honestly, I am not sure there was a thought process as much as it was a natural outflow of where I was in life. For the longest time I was a creator and a writer. However, it is very true that often authors and creators forget that at the end of the day you have to run our creative pursuits as a business.

I admit I did things a little backwards in that I really focused on the creative end of the spectrum before I ever though about things like how much I need to sell for to turn a profit, the costs of shipping, and overhead. I also thing there was some wisdom I learned in that there you learn more from failure than you do success. And boy did I have a lot to learn. Truth be told, I still do.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am an author of horror, mystery, and science fiction novels. My ultimate goal is to be an airport author. I want to give you something to read while you are stuck on that plane for the trans-Atlantic flight. There are too many books out there that hit you over the head with heavy facts, figures, and over-complicated plots. Not me. I want to make you enjoy the process of reading. Let me take you to a different dimension for a while. You will enjoy it, I promise.

Storytelling came easy for me. Even as a kid, I loved to come up with elaborate tales for my stuffed animals. I laugh at it now, but everyone called me a space cadet because I always seemed off in some other space. But the reality is that I prefer my own imagination. Eventually, when I started writing, I found out that others loved my imagination as well.

But that journey was not an easy one. Writing is easy. Writing well is extremely hard. I am still not perfect at it either and if I live another one hundred years, I will still not be perfect. Taking criticism of your work is a bitter pill to swallow when you first start out. Everyone from other writers, readers, editors, and publishers will have their own opinion of your work. As a writer, you have to learn to just sit back and enjoy the story you wrote. That is the biggest lesson I have learned. Write your own story and let the rest of the chips fall where they may.

If I had a megaphone and I could scream my message to the world, it would be that my goal is to entertain you because that is what a writer is, an entertainer. Come on over and read one of my books. You may find your new favorite author.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The Northern Virginia area is a really cool place. There are tons of things to see and do out here. I would naturally want to take you to Great Falls Park. The view is amazing. To understand and feel the raw power of nature at its most impressive.

Of course we will have to hit many of the hundreds of wineries out here. Most people don’t know that Virginia is part of what is considered the Napa Valley of the East. We have close to 300 vineyards in the state and that doesn’t include the ones in Maryland. But my favorite is just north of Leesburg at The Vineyards & Winery at Lost Creek.

We are proud of our revolutionary and civil war history around here and some of the greatest battles were fought in Virginia. We would most certainly want to go to the city of Leesburg where there are some amazing restaurants and amazing stories to read about the area on interpretative walks.

Finally, because you know your mouth will water the moment anyone mentions seafood, we will head over to Maryland and have some of our famous blue crab, crab cakes. Maybe, if there is time, we can spend a little time walking along the beautiful Washington D.C. waterfront.

But really, you have to make a return trip there is just too much to see and do around here. Hiking, biking, sailing, or just about anything else you can think of. We have it!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I love to shout out to my high school English teacher, Ms. van Pilsem. She read to us, even in high school, to teach us how exciting a good story can be. She dove deep into the words and gave life to them. She allowed us to explore the words in a way that no one had ever done for me before. Also, I have to thank my publisher, Tara Moeller, at Dreampunk Press for believing in me. Her encouragement is really wonderful.
