We had the good fortune of connecting with Elyce Kirchner and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Elyce, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I never intended to start a business. I worked as a tv investigative reporter, general assignment reporter, and anchor at NBC, CBS, and ABC stations across the county. Most recently, when I was a reporter at NBC in San Francisco, I suffered from sudden hearing loss and tinnitus due to a viral cold. It abruptly ended my nearly two decades career as a journalist in broadcast television. It was devastating sting, and I struggled to find a job outside of tv. A friend of mine who owned a PR firm in SF called me and said, “can you do media training?” I had no idea what that meant but said yes. I partnered with a former photographer I worked with at NBC, and we did our first media training with a CEO in tech. We walked out of that first session and said, “this is a business.” That was four years ago.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I was in the trenches of television news for nearly two decades. I’ve worked weekend overnights, lived in small towns far from friends and family, and made countless mistakes as I was learning. I am thankful youtube didn’t exist when I was a young reporter! My initial goal was to gain enough experience to return to my hometown of San Francisco. I’m proud to say that I worked for NBC in SF for six years and picked up several awards along the way, including an Emmy, AP, and National Headliner award. I now work with CEOs and c-suite executives to help them get ready for any media opportunity. I also tap into my extensive network to help get clients’ media coverage and national attention. My extensive experience and ability to get the best out of my clients set me apart. I love figuring out their story, helping clients better communicate, and helping them ultimately be more successful in the media.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
No question. We’d head to Calistoga in Sonoma County. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, so we are about an hour’s car ride to Wine Country. We’d stay at Indian Springs resort. It’s a place I first went to as a little girl, and I have spent countless birthdays and family celebrations there. We’d swim in the Olympic-sized mineral pool, run through vineyards, ride bikes to town, get spa treatments, and indulge in wonderful food and wine.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shout out to Jeff Clayton. We met working together for NBC News and from the moment we worked together we started talking about life after tv news. We founded Timeline Media together and he is an incredible friend and business partner. Also, I want to shout out to Martha Shaughnessy and Ami Hamilton. Both are badass female entrepreneurs who have helped me grow my business and mentored me in more ways than they will ever know.
