We had the good fortune of connecting with Kenyon Curtis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kenyon, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I’m from Detroit,Michigan. I have a very unique upbringing. I lost my mother at the age of 14. That really impacted my life for me and my older brother. The 14 years that I did have with my mother, she taught me some very valuable things such as cooking, cleaning, and how to be self sufficient. I had to grow up very quickly, throughout the years I’ve had some struggles – at one point I lived in a homeless shelter while attending school. I’ve had a lot of set backs but the one thing that I didn’t do was give up – I always knew that one day I would be where I wanted to be in life. All of those things that I went through didn’t happen to me, it happened for me and I wouldn’t change a thing. It’s taught me to look at life from a very unique perspective – you have the power to manifest greatness, even in the darkest times.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I was employed with Ford Motor Company for over 10 years as a body fitter, and during that time, I wanted a change. Working at a plant puts a lot wear and tear on your body. So I decided to apply for a supervisor position at another company. I knew it was definitely going to be a challenge for me. After accepting the position I quickly realize where my passion lies and that is with my business. I would have never in a million years believed I would be making a body butter and love doing it. I want the world to know that I love what I do, I love the testimony I get from people saying I helped heal their skin or helped their child’s eczema clear up. It’s a product and I perfected the consistency and Quality of my product. The reason behind name is that I wanted it to be a representation of myself (KEY) quality, consistent, smooth, and powerful.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well first and for most we have to hit some of my favorite vegan spots, Chili Mustard and Onions, and Seva located in downtown Detroit. Unburger located in Downtown Dearborn and the list goes on. When I want a good drink I head down to Good Vibes located on the east side of Detroit. Downtown Detroit has a new look with so many thing to do from shopping, eating, and ice skating it’s definitely a lot of fun just hanging downtown.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
A man who finds a wife finds a good thing and I did with my wife. She has been there pushing me creatively, speaking life into me, uplifting me when I’m down and encouraging me when I have doubt. My children – big smiles and bear hugs – have given me so much energy to make them proud. I have a special group of friends that I’ve been knowing for well over 20 years now. They’ve been there through the good and bad and I really appreciate them for that. I wanna thank my brother for his tuff love and my cousin for being honest and straight up with me about life. I also wanna thank all the people who have supported Key Essential Skincare.
