Meet Gosia Machaczka | Photographer & Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Gosia Machaczka and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Gosia, why did you pursue a creative career?
I think it always goes back to passion and following my intuition – I don’t always have a full plan for my career goals, but I know where I want to end up and I just keep pushing and working towards it. I stumbled upon photography by accident. In high school I was trying to figure out how to get into concerts of bands I loved, but couldn’t always afford to see live. I talked with friends, and ended up connecting with someone that was doing concert photography for a webzine. At that time I didn’t think I could do it myself, but I was writing a lot on my free time so I thought that I could do the interviews. After my friend started doing less and less of the concert photography I thought I would give it a try myself and instantly fell in love. The rush of having just 3 songs to get some good shots was amazing. I went from doing small gigs to bigger concerts, and then ended up shooting all the huge festivals in Sweden.
But I wanted to take it further, the story telling that I loved when I was writing pushed me to explore art photography, so I moved away from concerts over the time and focused on that instead. That’s truly what feeds my soul. I think I just have this need in me to create stories to share, and letting people interpret them, I leave something untold so they can fill it in with their life experiences.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Photography is often used as a tool for capturing the surface of a moment. I rather see it as a way to peel off the layers of reality, revealing its complex structure. I am driven by my passion for storytelling and in my latest series HOLLOW I leave space for the viewer to put something of themselves into the story I am telling. I stage a series of images intertwined into stories and depending on who is interpreting it, the story can be very different. I have heard several different versions of what the viewers think is going on in my work – and that’s what makes it still so exciting to me. Everyone wants to know if their interpretation is right, but the truth is that none of them is wrong.
I think my proudest moment so far was when a part of my project was highlighted in ArtAscent as they picked me to be their Bronze Artist. I was compared to the arguably most iconic American artist of the 20th century – Edward Hopper. I have never seen the resemblance, and to be truthful I didn’t intentionally draw inspiration from his art, but they saw parallel between his and and my artwork – what an honor!
If I had to describe my brand I would say: strong color stories, drama, and timelessness – no matter if it’s an art project, a portrait or product shoot.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I always try to take people to the New Beverly Cinema! I love that they show all movies on film, and how you get a chance to see a true classic on a big screen instead of having to rent it on one of the streaming services. For a nice brunch I would take a friend to Superba in Hollywood – lovely service, great food and low-key enough to be able to sit there for a while and catch up.
I also try to convince all my friends that visit from Europe to take a bike ride by the ocean. We usually rent bikes in Santa Monica and Venice and will follow the coast, stop for a lunch wherever we think looks cozy and bike back. It’s a fun full day activity that I wish I would do more often.
I have also recently done a sound bath and I loved it! I never though I would be able to enter the meditation phase as I always fall asleep, but this time I was actually able to do that. It was at TruFusion WEHO.
Another fun activity is Dance Church that I was recently introduced to by a friend, it’s a dance class but it’s very free – you are led by the instructor, but you are often free to move however you like. Just follow the music and get weird!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mother has always been my biggest supporter in my journey. She has never questioned my intuition, and always supported all my crazy ideas. She still does.
