We had the good fortune of connecting with Kasandra Munoz Godocito and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kasandra, why did you pursue a creative career?
My name is Kassandra Munoz Godocito. I work as a makeup designer in the tv/film industry. For those who don’t know what a Makeup designer is, basically what we do is that we design and decide the looks for the characters in a movie along with a costume designer and the director.
The foundation for everything I am doing today comes from my earlier soccer career, i had 2 practices twice a day 6 days a week from when I was 12-24 years old. I lived and breathed soccer. The most valuable lessons I learnt are dedication, discipline, problem solving and how to handle stress.
I wanted to study makeup and styling in highschool but my mom wouldn’t let me leave my hometown Örebro, to move to Stockholm. So I stayed in a soccer program in Örebro to finish highschool and then I was able to move to Stockholm. I still played soccer and worked on the side to save up some money for makeup school. 2012 I graduated from makeup school and started working with film without knowing anybody in this industry. How did I manage to do that, you might ask. During my time in makeup school I met two very special women that took a chance on me, they gave me an opportunity to intern for them on one of Sweden’s biggest tv productions, that’s how it all started.
After juggling soccer and building my own business I realized I couldn’t give 100% doing both so I had to make a choice and I chose myself and my business.
And that’s where the journey started. without soccer I would never be where I am today, and the lesson I learnt from that is what has got me to where I am today. This is my 10th year in this industry one of the biggest reasons why I am still doing this is because I feel free and I get to be creative and trust my own creativity. Another reason I am doing this is because I get to grow and become better everyday and it still challenges me and excites me both on a professional and personal level.
I feel lucky and blessed that I get to live my dream and passion everyday.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
It’s easy to just think of me and what i do, but I value the team that works with me and around me, doesn’t matter what positions you have, i make sure that i treat everybody the same so everybody feels comfortable and can thrive at what they do and at the end of the day that’s how you get the best results. It’s a team effort.
The biggest struggle in my career is still to feel valued and recognized as a strong woman for the work I do, in a very male dominating industry. They often try to minimize the work that we do whenever we want to adjust the makeup/hair before shooting.
I feel like there are not a lot of people in the industry that understand the value and importance of makeup and designs. the line is so thin between breaking the illusion for the audience of what’s fake or not,
I’ve learnt to choose my battles and it has given me thick skin so today I’m not scared of taking my spot that I deserve.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Marie Strömberg is the woman who picked me up right after i finished my makeup school 2012 she took me under her wings and introduced me to a very important woman and makeup Designer Mimmi Harms Oredsson that also took me under her wings and basically taught me everything i know in my early years of film industry. A few years later Marie Strömberg was gonna connect me to another woman and Makeup Designer Annika Stödberg that let me assist her for a few years and I was getting to try my wings with all the responsibility that comes with being on set. I had significant growth and had to face a lot of but fun challenges.
During the time I was working on set with Annika I also met another important person that would be a big part of my journey, the director Amir Chamdin. Who I connected with and came to work really close with, while I was assisting Annika Stödberg, a few years later Amir Chamdin was gonna give me the opportunity to do Makeup design for the Season 2 of Partisan, a tv-series . Amir believed in me and thought it was about time for me to do design so he gave me the opportunity to work on his tv-serie and that was the biggest project so far that i’ve done at that time in my career.
And of course my friends and myfamily that have always been with me since day 1, and to my mum, my support system.
